WINTER WEATHER, EXTREME COLD, CANCELS REMINGTON PARK THURSDAY NIGHT RACES
For Immediate Release
Thursday, December 05, 2013
OKLAHOMA CITY – The current winter weather and extremely cold temperatures and wind chill have forced a cancelation of Remington Park Thoroughbred racing for Thursday night, Dec. 5.
Remington Park remains open for simulcast racing and casino gaming.
Regular morning workouts were conducted this morning but as the weather worsened the decision was made to forego the nine-race program.
“After a comprehensive inspection of the racing surface, combined with the consistent lowering of temperature along with the advancing winter storm, Remington Park Officials have decided it’s in the best interest and safety to all horses, horsemen and jockeys to cancel this evening’s race card,” said, Remington Park vice president of racing and wagering Matt Vance. “Remington Park, the Thoroughbred Racing Association of Oklahoma and the local jockey colony, in collaboration with the Oklahoma Horse Racing Commission state stewards, will revisit the conditions first thing Friday morning. A decision on the remainder of this weekend’s races will be made then.”
Remington Park will ask the Oklahoma Horse Racing Commission for makeup dates for any missed racing programs that are canceled due to weather. Any racing programs added as a makeup will be tacked on to the end of the season, after Sunday, Dec. 15, presumably on Monday, Dec. 16 and so on if needed.
This is the first full-card racing cancellation at Remington Park due to winter weather since the freakish spring blizzard of March 20, 2010 when a full-program of American Quarter Horse, Paint and Appaloosa racing was postponed.
At this moment, pending approval to makeup the canceled race date, there are just five racing programs left in the 2013 Thoroughbred Season at Remington Park. Racing is scheduled to resume Friday and Saturday, Dec. 6 & 7 with a nightly start time of 7pm.
Open daily at 10:30am for casino gaming and simulcast racing, Remington Park also features the Bricktown Brewery on the casino floor. Admission, general parking and valet parking are always free at Remington Park, home of the $250,000 Springboard Mile for 2-year-olds, to be run on December 15, 2013.
Tracked by over 46,000 fans on Facebook and 4,700 Twitter followers, Remington Park is Oklahoma City’s only Racetrack & Casino and is located at the junction of Interstates 35 & 44, in the heart of the Oklahoma City Adventure District.
