HARD-TRYING SLEW OF SUCCESS GETS UP IN SOONER STATE

OKLAHOMA CITY – The final 100 yards of the $100,000 Sooner State Stakes was a showdown between Skuze Pleeze and Slew Of Success. The former was attempting to stay undefeated at Remington Park with the latter trying to continue a local winning streak. In the final strides, Slew Of Success found more in winning the restricted Grade 1 race for Oklahoma-breds by a head.

Owned by Mary Kirby of Pryor, Okla. and trained by her husband Jackie Kirby, Slew Of Success was ridden by Ricky Ramirez. The 4-year-old gelding won his third straight race of the season, going longer in each attempt from 300 yards to 350 yards to the 400 of the Sooner State Stakes. He crossed the finish in :19.607 seconds over a fast track.

Skuze Pleeze had the lead in mid-race but settled for second as the 7-5 wagering favorite. BP Southern Dynasty was a half-length behind the runner-up in third.

At 7-2 odds, Slew Of Success rewarded his backers with $9.40 to win, $3.60 to place and $3.20 to show. Skuze Pleeze returned $3.40 to place and $3.20 to show. BP Southern Dynasty paid $4.20 to show.

The Sooner State Stakes was the sixth career win from 16 starts for Slew Of Success while winning four races overall at Remington Park. Bred in Oklahoma by Toni and Lloyd Yother, Slew Of Success is by Cartel Success from the Dash Ta Fame mare Winnie Ta Poo. Earning $60,000 in the Sooner State Stakes, Slew Of Success pushes his overall money to $201,406.

Jockeys Ivan Carnero and Omar Reyes enjoyed riding triples on the night. Carnero won the first two races of the evening aboard Jess Shaky ($7.40 to win) and Paint This Kitty ($6.80). The Carnero-triple was complete Addies Saint Patty ($6.20) in race six.

Reyes won aboard Volcomator ($10.20) in race three, Storm Cat Starlet ($11.20) in race eight and Sweet Lady Corona ($25.20) in the 12th and final race of the night.

Carnero now has 28 wins for the season, good for fourth in the standings. Reyes has 20 wins, putting him into a tie for fifth-place with Agustin Silva. G.R. Carter leads the riding colony with 46 wins through 34 race dates.

Remington Park continues racing with a nine-race program on Sunday, beginning at 1:30pm.
