Remington Park Update on EHV-1 Precautions
For Immediate Release
Friday, February 26, 2016
OKLAHOMA CITY (Feb. 25, 2016) – Morning workouts continue daily at Remington Park as equine athletes and horsemen ready for the start of the 2016 American Quarter Horse Season. Officials at the racing facility are still monitoring an outbreak of Equine Herpesvirus (EHV-1) in New Mexico and remain diligent with stringent policies implemented to help prevent the spread of the virus here.
The outbreak at Sunland Park Racetrack has involved several dozen horses in New Mexico and two animals at a nearby training facility in Texas. On Tuesday, Sunland Park reported there had been no new positive EHV-1 tests for six days.
Remington Park, in collaboration with state horsemen and veterinary officials, implemented strict admittance policies in January prior to opening the stable area for horses. In addition, Remington Park completed a thorough cleaning of all surfaces in the barn area, and the starting gates, using a food-grade residual disinfectant.
“The safety of our horses is our No. 1 concern,” said Matt Vance, Remington Park vice president of operations. “We will continue to regulate the acceptance of horses into our stable area under the guidelines that have been developed, in order to prevent any possible infection of our equine population. No horses have been, or will be, permitted on the premises that have been in an affected quarantined area or their surrounding counties. This will remain in effect indefinitely.”
Horses were allowed to enter Remington Park to begin training on Feb. 12. The Quarter Horse Season begins on Friday, March 11 and continues until June 4.
