OKLAHOMA CITY – Remington Park’s feature event on Saturday night is the $100,000 Sooner State Stakes for older Oklahoma-breds going 400 yards. AJs High, winner of the race a year ago, will attempt to defend his title against others who have already won stakes races this season.

Sam Crow is the 7-5 morning-line favorite, based in large part on his win in the Mr Jet Moore Stakes here on April 6. Owned by Terry Baber of Burkburnett, Texas and trained by Trey Wood, Sam Crow won the original Sooner State Stakes in 2016, before it was declared a no-contest race due to the starting gate not properly releasing the field. In the Sooner State Stakes that counted later in the season, Sam Crow settled for runner-up status, a length behind AJs High.

AJs high won three stakes races at Remington Park in 2016 then parlayed that success into a win in the American Quarter Horse Association’s Challenge Championship at Los Alamitos in October and then a solid fourth-place effort in the Grade 1 Champion of Champions at Los Alamitos, Quarter Horse racing’s top event for older horses. Owned by Michael Teel of Columbia, Mo. and trained by Charley Hunt, AJs High is at 8-5 odds in the morning-line.

The field for the Sooner State Stakes, with trainer, jockey and morning-line odds:
1.    AJs High: Charley Hunt, Stormy Smith, 8-5
2.    Regard With Respect: Guillermo Valdivia, Larry Payne, 15-1
3.    Valiant Rogue: Judd Kearl, Rodrigo Vallejo, 4-1
4.    Sam Crow: Trey Wood, Ricky Ramirez, 7-5
5.    Ferrari James: Kirt Clark, Oscar Delgado, 6-1
6.    VF Red Surprise: Stuart Steele, James Flores, 15-1

The Sooner State Stakes is the ninth of 12 races at Remington Park on Saturday, with an approximate post time of 8:13pm. The Remington Park program begins with a special 3:45pm first race on Saturday, as the live program will surround the simulcast of the 143rd Kentucky Derby from Churchill Downs in Louisville, Ky., presented at 5:45pm. All times are Central.

Remington Park will offer normal Friday night racing at 6pm and Sunday afternoon racing at 1:30pm.
