Owned by H.V. Farms of Lexington, Ky. and trained by National Racing Hall of Famer Steve Asmussen, Paternal Pride shortened back to one mile in the $36,300 Wednesday feature over the turf. Jockey Donnie Meche had the call in the allowance and found a running lane for Paternal Pride as the field of nine made their way at the top of the stretch.
Getting through traffic after sitting in mid-pack around the final turn, Paternal Pride poured it on to the finish, winning by three-quarters of a length. He held off Mav Master in the process with Wabash Cannonball closing from last through much of the race to gain third, beaten 1-3/4 lengths. Paternal Pride handled the mile over firm turf in 1:37.61.
Based on his runner-up effort in the Remington Green, Paternal Pride was sent off as the betting favorite on Wednesday at 1-2 odds. The 5-year-old gelding paid $3 to win, $2.40 to place and $2.10 to show. Mav Master paid $8.60 to place and $5.20 to show. Wabash Cannonball paid $7.20 to show.
The win was the fourth from 28 career starts for Paternal Pride, a Kentucky-bred son of Majesticperfection from the Cozzene mare Like My Dad. The winner’s share of $21,525 boosted the career earnings for Paternal Pride to $148,617.
The Remington Park Thoroughbred Season resumes Thursday thru Saturday, Oct. 26-28, with the first race at 7pm-Central.
