Owned and bred by Terry Westemeir of Broken Arrow, Okla. and trained by Scott Young, Give Me Excitation was ridden by Floyd Wethey, Jr. The gelding was next to last in the field of eight as they came off the final turn in the 1 mile-70 yard event. Traveling wide but in the clear for the entire race, Wethey roused Give Me Excitation with a quarter-mile remaining.
Running five-wide off the rail, Give Me Excitation powered outside of rivals and was alongside the pace-setting Grace’s L C with a furlong remaining. He put the frontrunner away then had to fend off an inside challenge from K Kiddo, hitting the finish a neck to the good while handling the distance in 1:44.2 over the fast track. Imalittlehazey was up for third, 4-1/2 lengths behind the winner.
Away at 7-2 odds in the wagering, Give Me Excitation paid $9.60 to win, $6 to place and $4 to show. K Kiddo paid $9.20 to place and $6.20 to show. Imalittlehazey was third and paid $8 to show. Grace’s L C faded to fourth as the beaten 5-2 wagering favorite.
The second straight win of the season was worth $24,922 for Give Me Excitation who has now earned $108,645. A son by Don’t Get Mad from the Posse mare Sheza Botha Ours, Give Me Excitation has now won four of his 23 career starts.
