REMINGTON PARK SPRING SEASON STAKES SCHEDULE FEATURES 39 EVENTS WITH ESTIMATED PURSES TOPPING $5,000,000

The 2020 Remington Park American Quarter Horse, Paint and Appaloosa Season begins March 6, continuing for 50 dates through May 30. The season’s stakes schedule features a total of 11 Grade 1 events, led by the $1,000,000 Heritage Place Futurity, the richest race of the meeting, on the huge season-ending program that boasts nine stakes races.

The complete stakes schedule has 39 races, worth total purses estimated to top the $5,000,000-mark.

The richest races of the season are the three top futurities (Oklahoma, Remington Park, Heritage Place). They headline the 2-year-old Quarter Horse calendar at Remington Park.

The marquee race for the older horses falls on May 30 and has a new name for 2020. The Remington Park Championship now becomes the Debbie Schauf Memorial Championship. The Grade 1, $250,000 race is an invitational event.

The Remington Park Championship was renamed to honor Schauf, the long-time executive director of the Oklahoma Quarter Horse Racing Association who passed in August 2019.

The schedule of stakes races begins on opening night, Friday, March 6 with the $68,000 Mighty Deck Three Stakes for eligible Oklahoma-breds, 3 and older, at 250 yards. The stakes schedule holds 12 events for eligible Oklahoma-breds, many of them carrying restricted graded status.

The opening weekend (March 6-8) will host plenty of trials, qualifying contenders for the first futurity and derby of the season.

The Grade 2, $400,000 (estimated) Oklahoma Futurity, at 300 yards, will be contested on March 21 with qualifying trials conducted on March 7. The historic Oklahoma Futurity carried a final purse of $396,650 in 2019. The Oklahoma Futurity is the longest-running futurity in the sport of American Quarter Horse racing, with the first edition in 1947. The 2020 edition will be the 79th running of the event, held since 2006 at Remington Park.

The Grade 3, $250,000 (est.) Oklahoma Derby will share the bill on March 23 with trials for the race held on March 8. The Oklahoma Derby, at 350 yards, carried a purse of $255,750 last year.

Eligible Oklahoma-bred 2-year-olds will take part in the restricted Grade 1, $825,000 (est.) Remington Park Futurity on April 18. Trials for the 330-yard event will be conducted over two race dates on April 3 and 4. The Remington Park Futurity carried a purse of $825,210 in 2019.

The Grade 1, $1,000,000 (est.) Heritage Place Futurity caps the top races for 2-year-olds on the final night of the season, May 30. The trials for the race, with a purse of $963,100 a year ago, will be held on May 8 and 9.

The Grade 1, $250,000 Debbie Schauf Memorial Championship, an invitational event at 440-yards for 3-year-olds and up, is one of nine stakes races that makes up the monstrous final evening of the season. The night normally carries total purses worth more than $2,000,000.

The established veterans also have the Grade 1, $100,000 Leo Stakes early in the month of May. The 400-yard race serves as the Remington Park feature on a special afternoon of racing that presents the simulcast of the Kentucky Derby.

American Quarter Horse Association Challenge races return to Remington Park, taking place on different race dates on the calendar. The finals for the Grade 2, $60,000-added Bank of America Oklahoma Challenge will take place on March 29, at 440 yards, for 3-year-olds and older. If needed, trials for the event will be conducted on March 14.

The $40,000 (est.) Remington Park Distance Challenge will be run on April 25 at 870 yards, for those 3 and older. If needed, trials to determine qualifiers for the race around the turn will happen on April 11.

Many of the long-distance runners tend to utilize the $50,000 SLM Big Daddy Stakes as a tune-up for their turn races. The “Big Daddy” received a Grade 3 status for this year and will be held on March 14. The longer stakes races around the turn begin with the Grade 2, $50,000 Pauls Valley Stakes at 870 yards on April 2. The final turn stakes of the season is the Grade 2, $50,000 Remington Park Distance Championship on May 30.

There are nine stakes events on the calendar for Paint horses, with seven of those also including Appaloosas. The Grade 1, $150,000 (est.) Oklahoma Paint/Appaloosa Futurity, at 300 yards, leads off the schedule for the two breeds on March 21. Last year, the race was worth $162,025. The $50,000 (est.) Speedhorse Graham Paint/Appaloosa Derby will also be run on March 21. The Grade 1 race for 3-year-olds, at 350 yards, carried a purse of $61,100 in 2019.

The Grade 1, $250,000 (est.) Speedhorse Graham Paint/Appaloosa Futurity concludes the top races for Paints and Appaloosas on June 1. The event had a total purse of $259,400 in 2019.

A pair of Grade 1 races, restricted to only Paints, fall in April. The $125,000 (est.) American Paint Classic Futurity for 2-year-olds at 350 yards was worth $129,500 in 2019. The $50,000 (est.) American Paint Derby for 3-year-olds at 400 yards was worth $67,200 last year. Both races, presented by the Paint Stallion Breeders Association, will be conducted on April 25.
