CAIRO WARRIOR RETURNS TO HIS PREFERRED DISTANCE ON GRASS, WINS FOR FOURTH TIME AT ONE MILE IN ALLOWANCE FEATURE

Cairo Warrior has become a true miler on the grass, capturing his fourth win in eight tries at that distance in Remington Park’s featured allowance over the turf Thursday night.

The 4-year-old gelded son of Cairo Prince, out of the War Chant mare Warrior Girl, and Brock on By seem to be glued to each other’s hips every time they race. It was no different on this night as the two looked each other eyeball-to-eyeball from mid-stretch all the way to the wire. Cairo Warrior prevailed by a neck as the 2-1 wagering favorite while Brock on By settled for second at 5-2 odds. He was 2-1/4 lengths ahead of Charliecando, who was at 5-2 odds in third.

Cairo Warrior and Brock on By faced each other on Aug. 20 at Remington Park and Brock on By took that edition of the rivalry by a half-length at the distance of 1-1/16th miles greensward, finishing second while the former ran third.

Trainer Ronnie Cravens III entered Cairo Warrior back at the mile for this and it did wonders. The gelding has now won half of his eight starts at eight furlongs. Jockey Lane Luzzi stalked the pace with the winner down the backstretch and then rallied on the far turn. Cairo Warrior and Brock on By hooked up at the top of the lane and battled to the finish for supremacy.

Cairo Warrior earned $21,678 of the $36,300 purse and improved his career record to 22 starts, four wins, six seconds and six thirds for $131,862 in earnings. He is owned by Jeffrey Thomas Hoffman of Wichita Falls, Texas, and was bred in Kentucky by Mr. & Mrs. William Pape. The winner paid $6.40 to win, $3 to place and $2.40 to show across the board.

Running time for Cairo Warrior was 1:37.22 over the firm going as he sat a length off the pacesetting Brock on By all the way down the backstretch. He was still 1-1/2 lengths back entering the final turn for home but that margin soon diminished. Brock on By had set interior fractions of :25.02 for the first quarter-mile, :49.24 for the half-mile, 1:13.40 for three-quarters of a mile and was totally engaged with the winner as they passed seven furlongs in 1:25.36. It was Cairo Warrior’s fourth win in his past nine starts and his fourth win on the grass in 15 races on the surface.
