CARRIZALES QUALIFIES FOUR OF 10 FINALISTS FOR $973,665 REMINGTON PARK FUTURITY
Trainer Santos Carrizales, Jr. winds up with four qualifiers of the 10 fastest 2-year-old American Quarter Horses going to the restricted Grade 1, $973,665 Remington Park Futurity. He had two more winners on the second night of trials on Saturday, both going to the huge Oklahoma-bred stakes event.
The Remington Park Futurity is on Saturday, April 16. The Carrizales qualifiers on Saturday night were the fastest, San Lorenzo Ivory, and the third-fastest PYC Avenue. They had times for the 330 yards of :16.680 and :16.883, respectively, over the fast track.
Carrizales had the second-fastest and fifth-fastest on Friday during the first night of trials qualifying. Last year’s top jockey at Remington Park, Juan Pulido, qualified all four of those finalists. Those wins this weekend put him in a tie for the lead this meet with Cody Smith. Both jockeys have 15 wins apiece going into Sunday’s races.
The pair of winners for Carrizales gives him 16 for the season, catapulting him to the lead in the standings ahead of Dee Keener’s 14.
San Lorenzo Ivory was by far the fastest of all the trial entries for both nights, earning a 94 speed index. The next-fastest speed index for finalists was 88. This juvenile gelded son of Ivory James, out of the Heza Fast Man mare Ashleys Gold Digger, is owned by Rogelio Marquez Jr. of Rosenberg, Texas. Marquez also owns San Lorenzo Tay, who won last year’s Remington Park Futurity and will compete Sunday in the Remington Park Derby trials. The two horses have the same sire, Ivory James, but different mothers, so they aren’t technically related.
Carizzales only entered seven horses in the futurity trials, but qualified more than half of them to the finals. San Lorenzo Ivory was making the second start of his career in these trials. He had run second, beaten a half-length in a maiden race on March 10. He lost that night to Tyger King, who didn’t qualify for this final, finishing 10th-fastest on Friday night. On Friday night, the horses qualified with a 12-13 mph headwind all night while Saturday’s qualifiers raced with virtually no wind.
San Lorenzo Ivory was purchased for $52,000 at the Heritage Place September Yearling Sale last fall. He was bred in Oklahoma by Charlotte and Brett Northam. This gelding’s sire, Ivory James, was a winner of 5-of-11 starts lifetime and the best horse he has sired thus far is Instygator, who ran second in the All American Futurity in 2020 and followed that up with a couple of Grade 1 wins. One of them was the 2021 All American Derby at Ruidoso Downs in New Mexico.
