GONCALVES WINS ON VIENNA PRIZE AT REMINGTON PARK TO GAIN 2,300 CAREER SCORES
Jockey Leandro Goncalves won aboard Vienna Prize on Thursday night at Remington Park. The victory was his 2,300th in North America.
Vienna Prize had to outlast Vestes in a stretch battle to score the $30,000-level claiming event for Oklahoma-breds, going 1-1/16 miles. Vienna Prize hit the finish line a half-length better than Vestes, in 1:48.88 over a fast track. Vienna Prize is trained by Alan Williams and is owned by Adios Reality Farms of Pleasant Hope, Mo.
This was the third straight race Goncalves has finished first or second aboard Vienna Prize since gaining the mount in October. They won over the turf going about 7-1/2 furlongs on Oct. 10 then finished second at one mile over the main track on Nov. 22, prior to the Thursday main track win.
Vienna Prize is a 5-year-old gelding by Klimt from the Pure Prize mare M B Prize. He was bred in Oklahoma by Bryan Hawk.
Goncalves now has 23 wins this season at Remington Park, 10th in the jockey standings behind leader Stewart Elliott who has 81 wins.
A regular for many years at Remington Park, Goncalves has fashioned a solid career since moving from his native Brazil in 2005. He is a multiple graded stakes-winning jockey and enjoyed his best year in 2012 when his mounts earned $7,269,844. That year, Goncalves won the Grade 2, $500,000 Super Derby aboard Bourbon Courage at Louisiana Downs in Bossier City, La.
