JOCKEY DAVID CABRERA OUTDUELS ERIK ASMUSSEN IN BATTLE FOR FIRST PLACE IN REMINGTON PARK STANDINGS, FIVE WINS TO FOUR

Jockey David Cabrera won the last three races on the card Saturday night at Remington Park after Erik Asmussen laid down the gauntlet with four wins; Cabrera’s final three gave him the nightlong battle with a total of five notches on his belt.
The two riders hooked horns like a couple of battering rams on a mountain to fight it out for first place in the rider standings. Together they pocketed nine of the 10 trips to the winner’s circle on Saturday night’s card. Lane Luzzi was the only other jockey to win a race the entire evening.
While Cabrera took five different trainers to the winner’s circle with his victorious horses, one of Erik’s four wins on Saturday night summed up his evening perfectly – Trust Daddy in the fifth race. All four of Erik’s wins came for his dad and trainer, Steve Asmussen’s barn as the family pair dominated action.
Erik actually moved into a tie with Cabrera at six wins apiece when he won his fourth of the night. That must have been a wakeup call for Cabrera. He came right back with three consecutive wins to move three in front of Erik (9-6), taking the eighth, ninth and 10th races.
Erik came out of the jockeys’ quarters firing on all cylinders. He booted his first winner of the night home by six lengths in the first race, taking Cloud Number Nine ($3.80 to win) to the winner’s circle at 4-5 odds. He followed that with victories with Trust Daddy (2-1, $6.40), Nucleus (2-1, $6.60) in the sixth, and Mi Amiga (3-5, $3.20) in the seventh. All are trained by his father, who has won the training title at Remington Park an unprecedented 20 times in his career.
Cabrera then took the challenge from Erik to heart, winning the eighth race of the night aboard Lit Up (7-1, $17.20), the ninth at the wire with Bertani (6-5, $4.60), and the 10th with Dbook (4-1, $10.20). That culminated a five-win night for the former top rider at Remington Park.
Cabrera also made trips to the winner’s circle with Prisoner (5-2 favorite, $7.60) in the third race and Cajun Stoops (2-5 favorite, $2.80) in the fourth.
Cabrera’s wins came for trainers Justin Evans, Joe Offolter, Bret Calhoun, Todd Fincher, and Austin Gustafson respectively.
Both Asmussen and Cabrera passed three jockeys who were tied for first place going into the fifth night of racing at Remington Park this meet – Ramon Vazquez, Stewart Elliott and Jose Alvarez – who were all shut out on the evening. They each had five wins when the night started and still do.

Cajun Stoops (won by 2-1/2 lengths) – owner Bryan Hawk of Shawnee, Okla., and breeder from Oklahoma Nona Buley.
Lit Up (won by one length) – owners Kat Kirk and Wayne R. Sanders of Dallas, Texas, and breeder from Kentucky Andrew N. Warren.
Bertani (won by a neck) – owners Scott Dilworth and Randy Andrews of San Antonio, Texas, and breeder from Ontario, Josham Farms Limited.
Dbook (won by three-quarters of a length) – owners Millard R. Seldin Revocable Trust, and breeder from Kentucky, John Oxley.

Nucleus (won by three-quarters of a length) – owners Clark Brewster and Ken Reimer of Tulsa, Okla., and breeder from Oklahoma, Bryan Hawk.
Mi Amiga (won by 5-1/4 lengths) – owner Benjamin Gase of Dallas, Texas, and breeders from Kentucky, Pedro J. Gonzalez and Lenny Kohn.
Remington Park racing now moves into a new month with action Thursday through Saturday, Sept. 3-5. The first race nightly is 6:30pm-Central.
