JOCKEY STEWART ELLIOTT STUCK ON 5,999 WINS AFTER SIX TRIES THURSDAY AT REMINGTON PARK

In baseball, they say the hardest out to get is the final out of the game; it appears there is a similar motto in horse racing for veteran jockey Stewart Elliott.

Elliott had six chances Thursday night at Remington Park to reach the milestone of 6,000 career victories, but he remains stuck on 5,999 after coming close on a few mounts. He finished third aboard Transom Bay (10-1 odds) in the third race, third in the saddle of River Bomber (3-1) in the fifth, and third with Work Zone (15-1) in the sixth. He also rode Kissin Riches (7-5 favorite) in the seventh race but could do no better than fifth in that race.

It appears Elliott is finding it difficult to gain the one that will make him the 23rd jockey to reach that milestone for North American victories.

“I really never thought when I got my first win for my father at Keystone (Philadelphia track, 1981) in Pennsylvania that I would have a chance at 6,000 wins,” Elliott said. “For the most part I’ve been pretty successful (won the 2004 Kentucky Derby and Preakness aboard Smarty Jones).”

Javier Castellano at Saratoga in upstate New York became the 22nd rider to hit 6,000 career wins when he reached the milestone on Aug. 26 on Starship Lizzy.

“We talked when I went up to Saratoga recently, about reaching 6,000,” said Elliott. “Kind of joked around about who would get there first. I know him really well and we’re friends. We both realize how fortunate we are to be in this position.””

At 61 years of age, Elliott is thankful he is still physically able to bring in a substantial amount of winners at Remington Park. He is currently fifth in the local standings with seven trips to the winner’s circle this meet.

Endless Skyway Wins Thursday Allowance
Endless Skyway, a 4-year-old Oklahoma-bred son of Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile winner Caleb’s Posse, won Thursday night’s featured allowance race by three-quarters of a length under jockey Leandro Goncalves.

The dark bay/brown gelding cruised home over the 5-1/2 furlongs on the fast main track in a time of 1:05.05, outlasting Shelley’s Secret (2-1). C W Dazzle, the 7-5 favorite, checked in third, another head farther back.

Endless Skyway won the allowance non-winner of two race to improve to six starts, two wins and two seconds, earning $23,268 from the $39,000 purse. His lifetime earnings are now $51,382. He is owned by Thomas H. Jones of Ringling, Okla., trained by Francisco Bravo and was bred by J-D Claypool Ranch. He paid $8 to win, $3.80 to place and $2.40 to show.

Remington Park racing continues Friday and Saturday, Sept. 11 & 12 with the first race nightly at 6:30pm-Central. Friday’s races include three stakes events for Oklahoma-breds over the turf with the Cliff Berry Turf Sprint, the Shawn Bergquist Memorial and the Red Earth Handicap featured.
