MANOR BORN WINS SECOND STRAIGHT OVER REMINGTON PARK TURF IN SATURDAY FEATURE
Manor Born held off a cavalry charge from behind him in the stretch of the turf course Saturday night to win his second consecutive Remington Park race, this one the featured allowance.
Jockey Lindey Wade had won on this 5-year-old gelding last time out in a 7-1/2 furlong race on the grass against $20,000 claimers. That came on Oct. 4 at Remington Park. Now 22 days later, Manor Born, a Kentucky-bred son of Noble Mission (GB), out of the Street Cry (IRE) mare Street Line, got the riding services of leading jockey Stewart Elliott and he pounced at just the right time, passing the early three front-runners to gain the lead at the top of the stretch. A slew of horses pursued from behind, but Elliott had plenty in reserve in this 1-1/16 miles race greensward and prevailed for the win.
Manor Born was hammered down to favoritism in the early betting, but slowly went back up to 3-1 odds at post time. He paid $8 to win, $4.80 to place and $4.20 to show across the board. The gelding was clear by 1-1/4 lengths at the wire.
From the Heart (7-1) closed gamely through traffic from the back of the pack to get up for second with Harry Hernandez in the saddle for trainer Sarah Davidson. Specialsortastorm (6-1) was a neck back in third and Miami Moonlight (7-5 betting favorite) was fourth in the blanket finish, another head behind.
Manor Born, owned by Robert Scott Taylor of Katy, Texas, earned $20,796 from the $35,000 purse and saw his gelding improve to 27 starts, five wins, two seconds and three thirds for $84,164 in earnings.
Elliott sat fourth all the way down the backstretch with Manor Born as Special Memory (6-1), Specialsortastorm, and Daryls Trump Card (37-1) battled up front. Manor Born chased early fractions of :23.76 for the first quarter-mile, :49.49 for the half-mile, 1:14.33 for three-quarters of a mile. He took over near the top of the stretch, hitting the mile marker in 1:38.83 and finished up in 1:44.83 over the firm going.
It was Manor Born’s third victory in eight turf tries. He was bred by Sather Family.
Hernandez Stays at 998
Jockey Harry Hernandez was unable to move closer to his 1,000th career win in the United States on Saturday. He had four mounts on the card but only managed a third on Love Tank in the eighth race and a second on From the Heart in the ninth.
Hernandez will pick up his pursuit again on Wednesday night at Remington Park when he has two mounts on a nine-race program.
Remington Park racing continues Wednesday through Saturday, Oct. 30-Nov. 2. The first race nightly is at 6:30pm-Central.
