REMINGTON PARK OPENING NIGHT PROGRAM FEATURES GOVERNOR’S CUP, LARGE FIELDS
The Opening Night program for the 2023 Thoroughbred Season at Remington Park has been compiled. The first night of the 67-date schedule features nine races, led by the $100,000 Governor’s Cup with 2021 Oklahoma Derby winner Warrant among the entries.
A total of 86 horses entered to compete for the first night of the season on Friday, Aug. 18 for an average field size of 9.6 for the nine events. The total purses for the first evening reached $290,000.
Karl Broberg, defending leading trainer at Remington Park after winning his second title here last year, has entered four for the night. Jockey Harry Hernandez, currently the leading rider with 36 wins at Canterbury Park in Minnesota, will ride all of Broberg’s entrants on Opening Night.
Lindey Wade has been named on five mounts for the first Remington Park card. He is currently in second position with 33 wins at Canterbury, enjoying a solid summer after a few months of retirement.
Hall of Fame trainer Steve Asmussen, a 17-time leading trainer at Remington Park, will send four out on the initial evening of racing. Jockey Stewart Elliott will guide the Asmussen representatives, and three others, as he has been named on seven mounts on night one.
Notably absent from Opening Night is jockey David Cabrera, a four-time leading rider at Remington Park (2018-2021). Cabrera has been working horses in the morning at Remington Park and will accept mounts soon.
Isaac Castillo is coming back to Remington Park to handle calls for all-time leading owner Danny Caldwell. Castillo, currently tied for fourth in the Monmouth Park standings in New Jersey with 22 wins, has been named to ride five on Aug. 18.
Riders new to Remington Park this season include Rene Diaz, Hernandez, Luis Fuentes and Sofia Barandela.
New to the wagering menu this season at Remington Park is an additional Pick 5. The first Pick 5 takes place in races 1-5, while the new/second Pick 5 will normally fall over the final five races on the program.
The first race on Opening Night, Friday, Aug. 18 will take place at 7:07pm-Central.
