RUN SLEWPY RUN IS FIRST HORSE TO WIN BOB BARRY MEMORIAL STAKES FOR THIRD TIME
Run Slewpy Run became the first horse to win the Bob Barry Memorial Stakes at 7-1/2 furlongs over the turf at Remington Park when she won it for the third consecutive year Friday night.
The 5-year-old mare by Den’s Legacy, out of the Evansville Slew mare Imadancingslew, won the race for the third time for owner-breeder Mike Jones of Bristow, Okla., but for the first time for jockey Stewart Elliott and trainer Jayde Gelner. Jones moved the mare from the barn of Jesse Oberlander this year, who had won with her in 2021 and 2022. Run Slewpy Run’s half-sister Alternative Slew even got in on winning the Bob Barry Memorial, scoring the race in 2019 for Randy Oberlander. She was from the same dam, Imadancingslew.
“It’s wonderful to own this mare,” said Jones after her third straight victory in this stakes. “She has been such a delight ever since she was born. Jayde has done a great job with her. She was just beautiful coming down the stretch.”
The mare’s first race at Remington Park this meet on Aug. 18, after almost a year off, was nothing to write home about. She was sitting near the back, eight lengths behind and found herself trapped, dropping behind by 12 lengths. When she did finally have room to run, she closed to within 4-1/4 lengths of the winner, but by then it was too late.
On Friday night, Elliott had her sitting 10 lengths back but with plenty of room to run. She was still sitting in eighth after a half mile of the race but by the time she hit the stretch she had closed like a bullet to be 1-1/2 lengths in front. Run Slewpy Run finished 2-1/2 lengths clear at the wire as the 3-5 wagering favorite. Rainbows are Free (10-1) was the runner-up while Drenched (16-1) made it tight for second, getting third, beaten a nose.
Run Slewpy Run paid $3.40 to win, $2.80 to place, and $2.40 to show across the board. Running time for the winner was 1:32.34 after she cut into fractions of :24.08 for the first quarter-mile and :48.37 for the half-mile, set by pace-setting Special Treasure before fading.
Run Slewpy Run earned $30,000 from the $50,000 purse of the Bob Barry Memorial, to push her lifetime earnings to $336,641. She has started 19 times with seven wins, five seconds and two thirds.
Run Slewpy Run was tied with three other horses prior to this race for most wins in the series. The others with two wins in this race were Gianna’s Dream (2018 and 2016), Skedee (2012 and 2009), and She’s All In (2011 and 2010).
Jones extended his record to four wins in the Bob Barry Memorial as he bred and owned Alternative Slew as well.
The finish of the race was True Blue Sky fourth, Plenty of Vision fifth, Pearly sixth, Special Treasure seventh, Gotta See Red eighth and Kachina ninth.
The Bob Barry Memorial is named in honor of legendary sports broadcasters Bob Barry, Sr. and Bob Barry Jr. Between the father and son they covered over 60 years of sports in Oklahoma, winning numerous sportscaster of the year awards.
