SO JORDAN CATCHES HEAVY FAVORITE LETTA’S LEGACY IN STRETCH TO SEAL A REMINGTON PARK UPSET

Letta’s Legacy had won two races in a row, seven of her last eight and eight of her last 10, but there is an adage in horse racing that says, “The only sure thing is there are no sure things.”

Remington Park bettors were pounding their money down hand-over-fist to get a piece of the 1-9 odds that Letta’s Legacy was attracting. So Jordan, who wanted to be like Mike, at 8-1 odds, raced like Michael Jordan played basketball and would not be beaten on Saturday night.

As it appeared Letta’s Legacy was on her way to her eighth win in 15 starts over the Remington Park main track at 5-1/2 furlongs, taking the lead in mid-stretch, she was run down from behind by So Jordan, shocking racing fans here. Jockey Deshawn Parker showed why he has won 6,401 times in the saddle in his career (No. 15 all-time), measuring Letta’s Legacy and pouncing on her with So Jordan to win by three-quarters of a length for trainer Scott Corderman and owner C. Dale Ledgess of Davis, Okla. Letta’s Legacy had never been beaten at this distance in four other tries.

Parker is now 49 wins away from 14th place all time, behind Sandy Hawley’s 6,450.

The Oklahoma-bred allowance event for older females, scratched down to just four Oklahoma-bred mares. Many assuming that not many wanted to face off with Letta’s Legacy on her favorite track. That did not keep the connections of So Jordan, a 7-year-old mare by Wilburn, out of the Afleet Alex mare So What from stepping out of her stall on this night to pull off the upset.

It wasn’t like So Jordan had not seen the winner’s circle in a while. Saturday night’s victory was the third in her last four starts and sixth of 22 in her career. She covered the distance in a winning time of 1:04.69 over the fast track. She and Letta’s Legacy were chasing fractions of :21.97 for the first quarter-mile, :45.37 for the half-mile and :58.01 for five-eighths of a mile, set by front-runner Ship of Dreams (6-1). That pacesetter finished third, 3-3/4 lengths behind the winner.

So Jordan, bred by her owner, paid $18.80 to win and $2.20 to place. There was no show wagering after scratches. The winning mare earned $26,400 from the $42,680 allowance purse and improved to 22 starts, six wins, six seconds and four thirds for a bankroll of $190,910.

Victory For Vets Wins 12th Career Race, Earnings Nearing Half-Million Mark
Victory for Vets moved ever closer to the half-million dollar mark in career earnings, winning for the 12th time in 29 starts on Saturday night. Jockey Jose Alvarez pounced from fourth in the early going to catch front-runner McDude to win the one-mile race over the main fast track in the eighth race of the night. Dimatic checked in third in the $42,000 allowance race for 3-year-olds and older.

Victory for Vets, trained by Bret Calhoun and owned by James Stodola of Denton, Texas, was sent off at 5-2 odds and paid $7.20 to win, $2.80 to place and $2.10 to show. McDude was the second favorite in the betting at 9-5 and Dimatic was the post-time favorite at 8-5.

Winning time for Victory for Vets was 1:38.28. He cut into interior fractions of :24.45 for the first quarter-mile, :48.26 for the half-mile, 1:12.84 for three-quarters of a mile and 1:25.28 for seven furlongs. He earned $25,200 from the $42,000 allowance purse and improved to 29-12-5-3 for lifetime earnings of $493,428. He was bred in Texas by Asmussenequine.com.

Remington Park racing continues Sunday, Sept. 27 for Oklahoma Derby Day. The Grade 3, $400,000 event will headline a 12-race program that begins at 3pm-Central.
