SORCHA COMES FROM OFF PACE TO WIN SCISSORTAIL STAKES AT REMINGTON PARK

Sorcha took the first big step Sunday to paying back her connections for having such great faith in her even before she stepped foot on a racetrack. The 2-year-old Kentucky-bred filly won the $50,000 Scissortail Stakes at Remington Park for 2-year-old fillies at 6-1/2 furlongs.

It was only her first stakes race, but she stepped up in class and showed her own as jockey David Cabrera pushed her to the lead after a three-way speed duel collapsed in front of him. The $200,000 purchase at the Keeneland November Yearling Sale of 2025 has now won two of three starts lifetime for trainer Todd Fincher and owners Randy Andrews and Jim Cone of Lubbock, Texas.

This daughter of Maxfield, out of the Bodemeister mare Master of Hope, earned $30,000 from the race for her owners and improved lifetime to three starts, two wins and one second for a bankroll of $57,420. She broke her maiden at first asking this summer at Lone Star Park in Grand Prairie, Texas, on June 27 and then was laid off until Sept. 5 when she came to Remington Park. When facing first-level allowance horses in her Oklahoma City debut, the best she could do was a second-place effort, beaten a half- length by Strikingly Dandi. That was the first time Cabrera had gotten a leg up on the filly. She went off at 3-5 odds that night. On Sunday, she was backed at 7-2 odds and paid $9.20 to win, $3.40 to place and $3 to show.

The even-money favorite, Dont Worry Bout It, checked in second, two lengths behind Sorcha. That duo turned into the stretch, sitting in fifth- and sixth-place, respectively, before dispatching of the early front-runners. Specialcharlatan (27-1), Connie’scalculator (11-1) and Angelforblueskies (2-1), after showing the way early, all faded to the final three places at the back of the pack in this race, fifth, sixth and seventh.

It was the first win in this stakes series for all the connections of Sorcha. She was bred by St. Simon Place.

Winning time over the fast main track was 1:18.05. The top three, that included Gun Magic (24-1 first-timer) in third, cut into interior fractions of :22.30 for the first quarter-mile, :45.77 for the half-mile, and 1:11.41. By that time, Dont Worry Bout It had carved out the lead before Sorcha came soaring past her in the final stages. Kamikaze Girl (14-1) was fourth.

Remington Park racing resumes Thursday through Saturday, Oct. 1-3, with the first race nightly at 6:30pm-Central.
