STONEY BRICK ROAD SURVIVES OBJECTION TO RETAIN DEAD-HEAT WIN WITH NUCLEUS IN FEATURED REMINGTON PARK TURF ALLOWANCE

When all was said and done in Thursday night’s featured turf allowance race at Remington Park, Stoney Brick Road and Nucleus had dead-heated for the win, but wait, all apparently was not said and done.

The rider of Nucleus and top jockey in the standings, Erik Asmussen had claimed foul in the stretch against second-leading jockey David Cabrera and Stoney Brick Road. After looking at the replay for about five minutes, the Oklahoma Horse Racing Commission stewards determined there was no infraction and the dead-heat stood.

Stoney Brick Road, a 6-year-old Oklahoma-bred gelding was making only his second start of the season. He was also involved in his second consecutive video review by the stewards. On Sept. 11, he ran third in his first try greensward, but was disqualified and placed 12th for clipping heels with another competitor. That was a third-place finish in the $50,000 Red Earth Handicap. When Stoney Brick Road dropped in class Thursday night to allowance non-winners of three career races, it was no surprise when the betting public made him the heavy 4-5 wagering favorite. Nucleus was sent off at 3-1 odds.

Stoney Brick Road, a son of Mister Lucky Cat, out of the Rare Brick mare Ginger Brick Road, actually had his head in front with one more head-bob to go to the wire and that’s all Nucleus needed to get his head down at the mirror in a tie for the win. Nucleus is a 3-year-old Oklahoma-bred colt by Omaha Beach, from the Into Mischief mare Natalie’s Mischief. Roger Neff owns, trains and bred Stoney Brick Road while Steve Asmussen conditions Nucleus. Nucleus is owned by Clark Brewster and Ken Reimer of Tulsa, Okla. He was bred by Bryan Hawk.

The two winners finished 2-1/2 lengths in front of third-place finisher Kitty Code (9-2). Stoney Brick Road paid $2.20 to win, $2.40 to place and $2.10 to show while Nucleus returned $3.20, $3.20 and $2.60. Running time for the 7-1/2 furlongs on the firm lawn was 1:30.51. The pair of winners raced second and third behind front-runner Endless Skyway (19-1, fourth) before that one gave way at the top of the stretch. That’s when the battle ensued. The alleged infraction happened down the grassy lane with about a furlong to go.

The pair of warriors dug in, drawing away together after cutting into the early fractions of :24.01 for the first quarter-mile, :48.59 for the half-mile and 1:13.07 for three-quarters of a mile. The two horses’ owners split first-place and second-place money, receiving $15,736 each. Stoney Brick Road improved to 14 starts, three wins, and three seconds for a bankroll of $83,626. Nucleus moved to 7-3-1-0, $76,808.

The victory with Nucleus gave trainer Steve Asmussen his third win of the evening while his jockey son Erik also picked up his third. The Asmussens are having their way with the Remington Park standings as Steve Asmussen leads the trainer standings with 27 wins while Erik Asmussen leads the jockey standings with 24 wins.

Remington Park racing continues Friday and Saturday, Sept. 25 & 26, at 6:30pm. The lone Sunday afternoon of the season on Sept. 27, features the Grade 3, $400,000 Oklahoma Derby with a stakes-laden card beginning at 3pm. All times are Central.
