TEXAS SPEED QUEEN WINS FOR THIRD TIME IN LAST FOUR STARTS, TAKING FEATURED ALLOWANCE RACE UNDER JOCKEY IRAM DIEGO
For Immediate Release
Thursday, October 1, 2026
Texas Speed Queen has won four races in her career and three of those have come in her last four starts, including Thursday night’s featured first-level allowance at Remington Park. The race was for 3-year-old fillies going six furlongs on the main track.
This 3-year-old Texas-bred is the very definition of a filly that has figured it out. It was jockey Iram Diego’s first time getting a leg up on Texas Speed Queen, but they fit like a glove. The winning filly cruised to a one-length win at 9-2 odds and paid $11.60 to win, $4.40 to place and $3.60 to show. She covered the six furlongs in 1:10.82 over the fast surface, closing from third to outlast the even-money favorite, Irresistible, down the stretch.
One indication that Texas Speed Queen might fare well Thursday night was that she was racing at a distance that she loves. In her six races going three-quarters of a mile, she has won three of them. Trainer J.R. Caldwell had her ready to roll Thursday and she couldn’t be in better form. The other factor for her is the filly’s versatility. She won gate to wire in one of her starts at six furlongs in Texas and Thursday, Texas Speed Queen didn’t have much choice but to win from off the pace. She was bumped at the break, but displayed her ability to rate off the front-runners to win.
Texas Speed Queen is owned by Bradley Thoroughbreds and Caldwell of Emory, Texas. She earned $23,268 for the trip to the winner’s circle and improved her record to 12 starts, four wins, one second and three thirds for a bankroll of $152,307. The filly was bred by Brown Springs Farm.
The winner cut into early fractions set by From the Top Rope of :22.66 for the opening quarter-mile, :46.08 for the half-mile, and :58.09 for five-eighths of a mile. Irresistible, in second, finished a neck ahead of From the Top Rope (12-1) who faded to third.
Wethey, Jr. Triples Thursday
Jockey Floyd Wethey, Jr., pulled off a triple Thursday night at Remington Park, winning three of the first four events on the nine-race card. He took both halves of the early daily double, winning aboard Guapo ($15.20) in the first and Den’s Dazzler ($6.60) in the second. There was no doubt about either one of those wins. Guapo drew off to win by 9-1/4 lengths and Den’s Dazzler won by 3-3/4 lengths.
Wethey’s three victories came for trainer Scott Young (Guapo, race one), Mark Buehrer (Den’s Dazzler, race two) and Dick Cappellucci (Axton, race four). The riding triple happened in the fourth when Wethey piloted home his third winner of the night by open daylight. He was aboard Axton, who left them straining to keep up in a 6-3/4 length win at 1-5 odds. The winning owners, respectively, for the three Wethey winners were Warren Dean Hughes of Carmen, Okla.; Mike Jones of Bristow, Okla., and Bob Mattney of Lubbock, Texas.
Wethey now has 17 wins for the season, good for fourth in the jockey standings behind Erik Asmussen (28 wins), David Cabrera (27 wins) and Ramon Vazquez (19 wins).
