VETERAN RIDER LUIS QUINONEZ, CONDITIONER ABEL RAMIREZ-RODRIGUEZ GAIN LIP CHIP HONORS AT REMINGTON PARK

Luis Quinonez, the No. 2 all-time leading rider at Remington Park, became only the second jockey to win 1,500 races here. The accomplishment and other wins earned him the Lip Chip Jockey of the Week honor.

Conditioner Abel Ramirez-Rodriguez didn’t send out many horses during the Oct. 2-5 week at Remington Park, but he won with three-of-five to earn the Lip Chip Trainer of the Week. Ramirez-Rodriguez was an assistant trainer for Karl Broberg before that Mansfield, Texan retired a couple of years ago.

Only one other jockey has reached the milestone of 1,500 wins at Remington Park, and that’s all-time winningest rider here, Cliff Berry. Amazingly, when Quinonez hit 1,500 wins on Saturday, Oct. 4, he was still going to need 625 wins here to catch Berry. When he retired in 2015, Berry had 2,125 trips to the Oklahoma City winner’s circle.

Quinonez won the seventh race on Saturday aboard Icy River to reach the watershed mark of 1,500. That winner is trained by Cameron Milligan who owns the horse in partnership with Gregory Alan Pelzel of Bismarck, Ark.

For the week, Quinonez had three winners from 15 starts and his horses ran in the money 47 percent of the time.

In his career, Quinonez has gotten a leg up on 28,111 mounts, won with 4,043 of them, run second 3,853 times and third another 3,675 trips. His horses have earnings of $83,545,840, according to Equibase statistics. He is a multiple graded stakes winning jockey and some of his top horses have included Grade 2 winners Alternation (won the Oaklawn Handicap) and Gold Medal Dancer (won the Azeri Stakes at Oaklawn for No. 2 all-time winning trainer at Remington Park, Donnie Von Hemel). Other graded stakes winners Quinonez has ridden to victory are Brownie Points, Suddenbreakingnews and Shotgun Kowboy.

Ramirez-Rodriguez’s three winners this past week were City Ghost, Twelve Volt and Pass Line, all among the claiming ranks. All three horses were guided to wins by Remington Park leading rider Ramon Vazquez.

City Ghost may have been the most impressive winner for this stable as the 4-year-old mare drew away by five lengths at 5-1/2 furlongs on the fast main track as the 3-5 favorite. Twelve Volt won by 1-3/4 lengths at seven furlongs on the dirt at 6-1 odds, now a winner of three of the 4-year-old gelding’s last five starts. Pass Line got the week started off right for Ramirez-Rodriguez with a 3-1/2 length win at six furlongs on the main track.
