Even after 550 yards, the finish of this featured allowance race Saturday night was too close to call, but when the photo came down, it was Cash Back Hero who had won by a nose.

Jockey Angel O. Ramirez persevered for trainer Ed Hardy as Cash Back Hero outlasted EBW Kye for the victory. The winner is a 4-year-old Oklahoma-bred gelded son of Valiant Hero, from the Furyofthewind mare Pops Zoomin Fury. He earned $22,890 for owners Becky and Warren Johnson of Oklahoma City. Cash Back Hero was bred by Flag Ranch.

Cash Back Hero was sent off as the 5-2 second wagering favorite and paid $7.80 to win, $4.20 to place and $2.40 to show. EBW Kye (3-1) was another half-length ahead of third-place finisher and post-time favorite Lucky Luke (6-5). Running time for Cash Back Hero was :27.468 over the fast track as runner-up EBW Kye checked in at :27.474, six-thousandths of a second slower.

Cash Back Hero had been racing in primarily 870-yard races around the turn in the second half of last year at Prairie Meadows in Altoona, Iowa. Hardy made the decision to put him back on the straightaway at Remington Park. The fact that this horse was brought back to Oklahoma City may have been a bit of a surprise after he ran three average races at best last year here. It made all the sense in the world, however, because his owners reside here. Last year, Cash Back Hero finished seventh and sixth, twice, beaten by open daylight all three times at Remington Park. He also had finished sixth in 2024 in his only start here.

Whatever the problem was locally in the past, Cash Back Hero seemed to have turned the corner once he left Oklahoma City last year and was stretched out to the longer distances. He may have found his niche at 550 and 870 yards. He won twice around the hook at Prairie Meadows before being laid up after his last race on Aug. 31, 2025.

Cash Back Hero came back from the vacation like a horse possessed, showing a lot of heart to hold off the late rush of EBW Kye. The victory improved the lifetime record of Cash Back Hero to 14 starts, four wins and three seconds for a bankroll of $76,652. It was the first time in five starts he had even run in the money (first, second or third) at Remington Park, let alone win.

Remington Park racing continues Sunday with Extreme Racing on tap as there will be races among camels, ostriches, Clydesdales and zebras, along with pig races on their own track. The first race is at 4pm-Central with the Extreme Racing animals featured between the horse races.
