FREDONIAN WINS FOR THIRD TIME IN LAST FOUR TRIES FOR LEADING TRAINER KARL BROBERG AFTER BEING CLAIMED FOR $5,000

Remington Park’s leading trainer Karl Broberg has a magic wand when it comes to claiming horses and turning them into win machines; it has been no different with Saturday’s feature race winner Fredonian.

It happened last year with Greeley and Ben, who he claimed for $10,000 at Oaklawn Park and turned him into a multiple stakes winner by years end. Tonight’s winner, Fredonian, was claimed for $5,000 on July 30 at Louisiana Downs by Broberg. Since moving to Broberg’s barn, all Fredonian has done is win three of his last four starts, including tonight’s victory.

It was a convincing win, stepping up in class to a second-level allowance race from a beaten-$7,500 claiming race, as the 6-year-old gelded son of The Factor (War Front), out of the Mineshaft mare Breathtaking, hit the wire in front by 2-1/2 lengths.

On the day Broberg claimed Fredonian at Louisiana Downs in Shreveport, La., he ran third, beaten 3-3/4 lengths by beaten $5,000 claimers. The next out, the first in Broberg’s barn, Fredonian ran on a sloppy track at LaD in conditional claiming company for a $7,500 tag and he loved the off going. He was like a kid in a candy store, romping home a winner by 23-3/4 lengths. After running fourth against allowance horses on the grass the next out, he came back with a class drop to beaten $7,500 claimers and won by 4-3/4 lengths. He added another easy victory to his resume on Saturday night in Oklahoma City under jockey Freddy Manrrique at 5-1 odds.

He covered the 1 mile, 70 yards on the main track in a time of 1:43.71 over the fast. He stalked in fourth, just off the pace down the backstretch and moved to the lead as they turned for home. Manrrique asked him for his best and Fredonian gave it to him. The gelding cut into fractions of :24.33 for the first quarter-mile, :47.92 for the half-mile, 1:12.84 for three-quarters of a mile and had the lead at the mile in 1:39.31.

Fredonian paid $13.40 to win, $7.40 to place and $4 to show across the board to his backers.

Beckett’s Luckyday (19-1) reported second in the race and was a neck ahead of third-place finisher Shadowless (3-1). The post-time favorite, Prodigious Bay (5-2), set the early first-quarter pace, but faded to last in the field of seven horses.

Fredonian earned $21,678 from the $38,750 purse for owner End Zone Athletics (Broberg) of Mansfield, Texas. The winner improved his record to 42 starts, six wins, six seconds, seven thirds for a total bankroll of $110,187. Fredonian was bred in Kentucky by William B. Harrigan.
