JOCKEY ERIK ASMUSSEN FACTOR IN FATHER STEVE ASMUSSEN’S MOVING CLOSER TO 11,000 CAREER VICTORIES AS TRAINER

Steve Asmussen, the all-time winningest trainer in North American racing history, crept closer to 11,000 career victories Saturday night at Remington Park. One of his jockey sons, Erik, helped the cause by riding all three of the Asmussen winners on the night.

Erik’s three wins on the card, all with horses trained by his dad, moved Steve to the 10,995 mark in his career. Asmussen started the day with 10,991 wins, and earlier in the day won a race at Keeneland in Lexington, Ky., with Tap Into This in an allowance-optional claiming race to move to 10,992.

Steve became the all-time winningest trainer in the annals of North American racing when he won for the 9,446th time on Aug. 7, 2021 at Saratoga in upstate New York, passing Dale Baird. A year and a half later, on Feb. 20, 2023, Asmussen became the first trainer in history to walk to the winner’s circle for the 10,000th time when Bet He’s Ready won at Oaklawn Park in Hot Springs, Ark.

On Saturday night at Remington Park, Erik and Steve were virtually unbeatable during the middle of the card, combining talents to win the third, fourth and fifth races. That put Asmussen in great shape to make the 11,000-win milestone in the next few days. On Sunday, he has entered four horses at Keeneland and three at Remington Park. On Monday, four more have been entered at Horseshoe Indianapolis.

Asmussen’s three winners at Remington Park with son Erik were Multiple Opinions ($5.20 to win) in the third, Seven Taylors ($2.40) in the fourth and Not a Lady ($4.60) in the fifth. Multiple Opinions won for the second time in his career in a claiming, non-winners-of-two race. Erik won that race by a head as the 8-5 favorite for owners, the Ackerley Brothers Farm (Robert Ackerley) of Houston, Texas. Multiple Opinions was bred in Kentucky by Glory Days Breeding.

The Asmussens continued their streak when Seven Taylors won a maiden claiming $10,000 race in his 15th start in the next race. This was a race that was visually impressive as Seven Taylors, owned by Steve himself, cruised home to a 12-length victory. He was bred in Kentucky by Glenn Todd. Seven Taylors was bet just like she ran, as the 1-5 odds-on choice by the wagering public.

The third win on the night was from second-time starter Not a Lady, owned by Winchell Thoroughbreds (Ron Winchell) of Las Vegas. The 2-year-old Kentucky-bred daughter of Into Mischief, out of the More Than Ready mare Justa Lady, loved the move from the dirt to the grass and Erik won this race by a full length as the 6-5 favorite. She was bred by Curtis C. Green.

VETERAN JOCKEY LUIS QUINONEZ REACHES 1,500 REMINGTON PARK
Remington Park’s second all-time winningest rider, Luis Quinonez, reached a milestone Saturday when he became only the second jockey to reach 1,500 wins at this track. The top Remington Park jockey in track history, Cliff Berry, is the only other to reach that mark with 2,125 wins in Oklahoma City.

Quinonez hit the 1,500-mark in the seventh race Saturday when Icy River ($5.80), trained by Cameron Milligan and owned by Gregory Alan Pelzel and Caleb Milligan of Bismarck, Ark., pushed past Shopping Accident in the stretch to win. It was the second trip to the winner’s circle on the night for Quinonez, who has been a regular rider at Remington Park since October 1989. Icy River was bred in Kentucky by Calumet Farm.
Quinonez’s other victory on the night Saturday came in the sixth race as he romped home a winner aboard Oklahoma-bred filly Gospel Cozy ($4.40) for owner-trainer-breeder Steve Williams.

Remington Park racing continues Sunday, Oct. 5 with a nine-race program beginning at 2pm-Central.
