JOLIE LAIDE PULLS UPSET IN FEATURED REMINGTON PARK ALLOWANCE RACE AS 14-1 LONGSHOT

In a featured allowance race that included multiple stakes-caliber horses, it was the 14-1 longshot Jolie Laide that prevailed Sunday night at Remington Park

This field included a horse that raced in the $3 million All American Futurity two years ago and another that was coming in from Los Alamitos in California where he raced in predominantly Grade 1 stakes races. Mountainaire had finished fifth in the 2024 All American Futurity and Edberg Verde was competitive in Grade 1 races on the West Coast, but neither could hold a candle to Jolie Laide on this night.

The upset win wasn’t all that far-fetched as it seemed to bettors, however. Jolie Laide, a 4-year-old Oklahoma-bred mare by Big Lew, out of the Jesse James Jr mare Two Wines, hadn’t won in a while, but when she did, it was in some tough company. Her last win before Sunday came on June 19, 2025 in the $132,000 Quarter Horse Racing Association of Indiana Derby at Horseshoe Indianapolis. She won that race by a head at 7-2 odds. In fact, she had not gone off at double-digit odds in eight of her last nine starts, getting bet down in nearly every one of those attempts.

Jolie Laide broke slowly in her only other start this meet here and finished seventh in allowance company, so many of her backers shied away in Sunday’s race. Under jockey Edwin Escobedo, she blew out of the gate like she had been goosed, going straight to the front and she was never headed in the 400-yard race in this open allowance. She paid $31 to win, $18.60 to place and $9.60 to show. Oh, and Mountainaire, the All American competitor from the recent past, could do no better than fifth at 11-1 odds and Edberg Verde, the 2-1 favorite out of California, checked in behind Mountainaire in sixth.

Jolie Laide wasn’t the only longshot that was up to the task as DM Nite Hawk (12-1) ran second, losing by a neck to the mare. That $2 exacta was worth $543.60. DM Nite Hawk was ignored because he came in from smaller tracks. One had to go back two years for that gelding to show up big at larger venues. He was the 5-2 favorite in the Grade 2 Louisiana Downs Futurity but he got bumped at the start and ran fifth on March 30, 2024. He ran big tonight, finishing another nose in front of third-place runner Nine One Won (7-1). With that horse completing the trifecta, that 50-cent wager returned $1,210.40. Political Motions (7-2) completed the superfecta. That 10-cent wager was worth $2,644.335 to the lucky ones who bet it.

Jolie Laide earned $26,250 from the $42,230 purse and improved her career record to 16 starts, six wins, and four seconds for a bankroll of $184,122 for owner Doug Ruby of Piedmont, Okla. She is trained by Kevin Goodnight. The winner was bred by her owner.

Running time for the 400 yards was :20.198 seconds over the fast track. Jolie Laide scored an 80 speed index into a stiff 20 mph-plus headwind.

Remington Park racing continues Thursday through Sunday, May 21-24. The first race nightly is at 6pm except for Sunday racing at 4pm.
