LEADING RIDER FRANCISCO CALDERON PICKS UP MOUNT ON EYESA WAGON MY TALE, QUALIFIES HER AS FASTEST FOR REMINGTON PARK OAKS
Remington Park leading rider Francisco Calderon was just hanging out in the jockeys’ quarters on Sunday afternoon, not really counting on qualifying anyone for the finals of the $160,670 Remington Park Oaks. Then trainer Marc Jungers made a change.
Jockey Christian Ramos was originally named to ride Eyesa Wagon My Tale in Sunday’s Oaks trials. That didn’t happen. So, when Jungers needed a new rider for his 3-year-old Oklahoma-bred filly, who better to ask than the track’s leading rider, Calderon.
Now, Calderon has the fastest qualifier for the Oaks final, Eyesa Wagon My Tale, scheduled for Saturday, April 19 at 400 yards. Under Calderon, the sophomore American Quarter Horse daughter of Wagon Tales, out of the Country Chicks Man mare Eyesa Candy Chick sprinted to the front right out of the gate and never was headed in her trial.
Eyesa Wagon My Tale hit the wire in :19.501 seconds, earning a 98 speed-index, the quickest of all the 3-year-old Oklahoma-bred fillies who entered the trials Sunday. The filly held off her competition in the second Oaks trial of the day (race four) by a half-length with a tailwind of 12 mph over a muddy and sealed track.
Eyesa Wagon My Tale won for the second time in her career in only six starts and improved her bankroll to $42,976. Eyesa Wagon My Tale will be trying to win a stakes race for the first time when she goes in the Oaks finals. She has run second three other times in her career. It was the first time Calderon had ridden this filly when he got a leg up for the trials Sunday.
Eyesa Wagon My Tale was bred in Oklahoma by Randy and Stacy Hill. It was the filly’s second race in the mud of her three races here and both times on the wet tracks she has been a winner.
Three trials were run Sunday to determine the 10 fastest qualifiers for the Oaks for Oklahoma-breds. The rest of the top 10 qualifiers for the Oaks past the fastest qualifier (with jockey, trainer, trial number, race number, time and speed index) were:
