LEADING TRAINER SANTOS CARRIZALES HAS FASTEST QUALIFIER SECOND NIGHT IN A ROW AT REMINGTON PARK

Leading trainer at Remington Park, Santos Carrizales, Jr., sent out Friday night’s fastest qualifier on night two of trials for the Grade 1, $1,112,440 Heritage Place Futurity finals, the second night in a row for that feat.

On Friday, it was Fancy Scarface that blazed down the track in the fastest 350-yard time, stopping the timer in :17.355 on a fast track for a speed index of 98. It was the seventh of 10 trials and it was run with the flag lying limp against the infield pole, indicating no breeze. His stablemate, Ivory Senator had a faster time on Thursday night in :17.272, but with a 15 mph tailwind for a 101 speed index.

In all, Carrizales finished with those two fastest horses in the trials and the third-fastest in Friday night’s heats with Turcotte. That horse was not fast enough to win his trial, however as he was beaten a half-length by $441,000 Oklahoma Futurity winner Tres Crystals in the eighth race. Tres Crystals was the second-fastest qualifier Friday night.

Fancy Scarface, a winner by three full lengths in his trial, was never bothered in breaking from the gate or during the race. He broke from the No. 3 post and the 4-horse broke outward while the 2-horse broke in, leaving a wide-open path for the winner. It was like the parting of the Red Sea. Remington’s leading jockey Juan Pulido took advantage of the clear road ahead and kept Fancy Scarface on a straight line to the wire. It was very different in the horse’s last race when he was sent off as the 8-5 favorite in the Oklahoma Futurity against Tres Crystals. On that night, March 19, Fancy Scarface broke seventh instead of first and was squeezed back behind the field. He had no chance and finished sixth in his only career loss. He is now 2-for-3 lifetime going into the finals for owner Rito Sosa of Blanchard, Okla. This 2-year-old gelded son of PYC Fun N Fancy, out of the Walk Thru Fire mare Dolls in Fire, is an Oklahoma home-bred for Sosa.

Fancy Scarface’s sire won the 2018 Remington Park Derby. PYC Fun N Fancy won 5-of-14 starts lifetime for almost a half-million dollars earned, so the bloodlines run true.

The sire of Ivory Senator (top qualifier from Thursday), Louisiana Senator, had similar success in his career, winning 8-of-20 starts for nearly $600,000 in earnings. He was a three-time stakes winner in one meet at Remington Park in 2011, taking down the Eastex Stakes, the Leo and the Remington Park Championship. He also won the Golden State Juvenile as a 2-year-old in 2008 at Los Alamitos in California.

Pulido rode both fastest qualifiers each night and will have an interesting decision to make for his Heritage Place Futurity mount.

The following were the five fastest qualifiers Friday with times, speed index, race number, jockey and trainer, followed by Thursday’s qualifiers:

1) Fancy Scarface, :17.355, 98, trial seven, Juan Pulido, Santos Carrizales (no wind)
