LETTA’S LEGACY PREVAILS BY HEAD TO WIN OKLAHOMA CLASSICS DISTAFF SPRINT at REMINGTON PARK

Every time Letta’s Legacy wins, it seems there is a little divine intervention at play. She won for the seventh time in her career Friday night at Remington Park, taking the $99,600 Oklahoma Classics Distaff Sprint. Her owner-trainer-breeder C.R. Trout of Edmond, Okla., gave his late wife Arletta a lot of the credit.

“Arletta named all our horses for us and after she passed, we decided to pay tribute to her by naming this one after her,” Trout said. “We still rely on (Arletta) and ask her things.”

It was Trout’s second win of the night and 18th overall in the Oklahoma Classics. He is well behind all-time trainer Donnie Von Hemel, who has 32 wins in the Classics races. Trout has won the Oklahoma Classics Distaff Sprint five times. His other winners came with Sunday Flashback in 2021, Hailstorm Slew in 2017, Euro K Shotgun in 2016 and with Shotgun Gulch in 2010.

Jockey David Cabrera won this race for the second time, both times for Trout. His other trip to the winner’s circle came with Hailstorm Slew.

Cabrera put Letta’s Legacy on the lead as soon as the gate opened and was never headed. Letta’s Legacy, a 4-year-old Oklahoma-bred filly by Practical Joke, out of the Sunday Break (JPN) mare Sundayville Break, was asked by Cabrera from the one post-position and took the shortest way around the track in the six furlongs race. As the 3-5 odds-on favorite, she prevailed, but by only a head over the fast-closing Nice Neighbor (9-2). Nice Neighbor had come from mid-pack to make her big run in the stretch.

“I love to ride Mr. Trout’s horses,” said Cabrera, who won a Classics race for the 12th time. He stands at No. 6 on the all-time Classics jockey list of winners with that result. “Honestly, I knew we were going fast, but down the lane, I knew I had plenty of horse.”

Letta’s Legacy set fractions of :21.73 for the first quarter-mile, :44.64 for the half-mile and :57.09 for five-eighths of a mile before finishing the six panels in 1:10.54 on the fast track.

Letta’s Legacy paid $3.20 to win, $2.20 to place and $2.10 to show.

Finishing another 2-3/4 lengths back behind the top two finishers in the Distaff Sprint was Calebs Lady (26-1) in third. The rest of the order of finish was Seriously Outahere (6-1) fourth, Artistic Vision (8-1) fifth, Xyngin Spitfire (23-1) sixth, Kiss and Tell (18-1) seventh, Kachina (94-1) eighth and Floras Ora (12-1) ninth.

Letta’s Legacy earned $59,760 from the purse and improved lifetime to 16 starts, seven wins, six places and one third for $275,865 in earnings.
