LETTA’S LEGACY UPSETS MISS CODE WEST AT REMINGTON PARK

An Oklahoma-bred allowance for older fillies and mares provided the return to Remington Park for Miss Code West on Saturday night. However, the end result was not what most expected for the two-time defending Horse of the Meet as Letta’s Legacy had other ideas about who would win.

Owned, trained and bred in Oklahoma by C.R. Trout of Edmond, Okla., Letta’s Legacy overcame starting last in the field of six to win the race at 6-1/2 furlongs by 2-3/4 lengths in 1:17.02 on the fast track.

Caleb’s Lady and Kiss and Tell battled for the lead at the gate-break, with the 1-5 heavy favorite Miss Code West in third on the outside. Jockey David Cabrera allowed Letta’s Legacy to easily move to the lead by the five-furlong mark, splitting the early front-runners in the process. Miss Code West was also allowed to move at her leisure under Floyd Wethey, Jr., staying on the outside along the backstretch.

Letta’s Legacy floated wide out of the turn into the stretch, with Miss Code West moving wider to set up a stretch battle… that did not take place. Letta’s Legacy had plenty left once Cabrera called for her best. She easily held off the mild bid by Miss Code West who could not find the late kick she has flashed easily in her previous seven wins at Remington Park.

Calebs Lady finished third, 7-3/4 lengths behind the winner.

The small upset was the first win for Letta’s Legacy over Miss Code West after four previous attempts, all in stakes company. Letta’s Legacy was second in the 2024 Useeit Stakes, 2024 Oklahoma Distaff Handicap and the 2023 Oklahoma Classics Lassie. She was a distant sixth behind Miss Code West in the 2023 Slide Show Stakes.

A 4-year-old filly by Practical Joke from the Sunday Break (Jpn) broodmare Sundayville Break, Letta’s Legacy was at 7-2 in the wagering and paid $9.60 to win, $2.20 to place and $2.10 to show. The $26,349 winner’s share of the $44,000 purse, moves the all-time earnings for Letta’s Legacy to $215,995. She has started 14 times and has now won six with six seconds and one third-place effort.

Miss Code West suffers only her second defeat at Remington Park in nine attempts here. The Saturday effort was her first defeat in Oklahoma-bred company at Remington Park, to go with her second-place run in the 2024 Remington Park Oaks behind Alpine Princess. Miss Code West maintains her perfect in-the-money record at Remington Park with nine starts, seven wins and two seconds.

Cabrera Triples
The victory aboard Letta’s Legacy was the third on the Saturday night program for David Cabrera.

The hat trick started in the second race when Cabrera rode So Jacksann ($3.40 to win) to victory. His second triumph came on Cash Follows Me ($2.40) in the fourth race.

The Cabrera triple gives him seven wins for the season. A four-time consecutive leading jockey at Remington Park (2018-2021), Cabrera is tied for second in the rider standings with Ramon Vazquez after five race dates. Stewart Elliott, the defending two-time leading rider here, sits atop the standings with nine wins.

Remington Park racing continues Thursday through Saturday, Aug. 21-23, with the first race nightly at 6pm-Central.
