LONGSHOT IN SHORT FIELD, KIRBY KAYE, UPSET WINNER IN FEATURED ALLOWANCE OVER SLOPPY TRACK

Kirby Kaye didn’t mind a little slop in her face as she came from just off the pace to pass two horses at the top of the stretch, winning Saturday night’s allowance feature on a sloppy track as a 13-1 upsetter.

The race had originally been scheduled for 7-1/2 furlongs on the turf, but a monsoon of showers prior to racing left that course much too wet and the race was switched to one mile on the main track.

Kirby Kaye, a 4-year-old Kentucky-bred filly by Lea, out of the Indian Charlie mare This is How, loved the sloppy going and sat patiently behind the two front runners for the first half-mile before Isaac Castillo pushed the button for Kirby Kaye to go. The filly ran down one favorite in Copper Em (even-money) and held off another Contour (4-5) for the victory. At one point, halfway through the race, Kirby Kaye experienced traffic trouble, getting boxed in, but Castillo rode brilliantly to find room and pounce.

Kirby Kaye won for the second time in a row for trainer Ingrid Mason and owner Dream Walkin Farms of Norman, Okla. The filly had won on the grass at one mile last time out against $30,000 claiming non-winners of two. She stepped up a bit in class Saturday, running with allowance non-winners of three, but it didn’t matter. Kirby Kaye drew off to win by 2-1/2 lengths.

She covered the mile in 1:40.26. Copper Em held on for second, another 2-1/2 lengths in front of the favored Contour in third. Kirby Kaye paid $29.40 to win, $10 to place and $2.80 to show. She earned $21,600 from the $36,000 purse and improved to eight starts, three wins, and two seconds for a bankroll of $71,468. She was bred by her owner.
