MUY PICOSITA WINS SECOND RACE IN ROW, TAKING REMINGTON PARK SATURDAY FEATURED ALLOWANCE
Muy Picosita won her second race in a row on Saturday, May 24 to remain undefeated at Remington Park as jockey Gonzalo Gutierrez booted home this 3-year-old Texas-bred filly by a head as the even-money favorite.
Translated to English, this filly’s name means “very spicy,” and she has been nothing but red hot since arriving in Oklahoma City. The only poor race in her career was her debut in a maiden event at Sam Houston Race Park in Texas in April 2024 when she was fifth, beaten 1-3/4 lengths.
After changing hands at the Heritage Place Winter Mixed Sale in January this year, trainer Fidencio Jiminez has her on the winning path at Remington Park. She broke her maiden by a widening 1-1/2 lengths to win at first asking in Oklahoma City with Gutierrez in the saddle on April 24. On Saturday night, it was the first time against winners for this sophomore daughter of Chilitos, out of the Tres Seis mare Classy Seis. She managed victory by a head against the tougher class, but a win is a win.
Both Muy Picosita at Remington Park have come at 330 yards. Her maiden win came in a time of :16.831 seconds for an 88 speed-index with a headwind of 10 mph. On Saturday night Muy Picosita hit the finish line in :16.635 for a 94 speed index with an 8-mph crosswind. She was sent off as the even-money favorite Saturday and paid $4.20 to win, $3.20 to place and $2.60 to show.
Muy Picosita earned $13,575 for owner Jakelin Vega of Oklahoma City from the $23,000 purse. The allowance conditions were for horses that had not won two races lifetime.
Muy Picosita was bred by the Terrazas Family and was purchased at the Heritage Place sale for only $8,000. She now has two wins from three starts for total earnings of $26,535.
Riding Triple for Mario Delgado
Mario Delgado has turned on the jets in the jockeys’ race with only five live racing dates remaining. He had a riding triple on Saturday night as he was one of four jockeys with at least two wins on the card. The others with multiple wins, two each, were Cody Smith, Rolando Raudales and Roman Cruz.
It didn’t appear Delgado was going to have a big night as he was shut out in the first five races of the 10-race program. Delgado’s trips to the winner’s circle started in race six when PYC Fancy Return ($16.20 to win) got home first in a maiden claiming race for owner Tovars Little Farm (Amanda Rocha) of West Jordan, Utah, and trainer Juvenal Licona-Vazquez. Rocha also bred the horse in her home state.
Delgado’s second win came in the very next race with Texas Rein ($5.80) winning a claiming race for owner Laci Devereaux of Shawnee, Okla., and trainer Larry Devereaux. Texas Rein is an all-family affair as he was bred in this state by Arthur Devereaux.
Delgado’s final win of the evening for the hat trick came in the ninth race aboard SR Dark Storm ($3.80) for Tovars Little Farm once again and Licona-Vazquez. This Texas-bred gelding was not bred by Rocha, however. He was bred by Silvia Robles.
Delgado now has 30 wins for the season, sitting third in the Remington Park jockey standings behind Juan Pulido (64) and Francisco Calderon (38).
Remington Park racing continues Sunday, May 25 with first post time of 4 p.m. CDT.
