PLENTY OF VISION PULLS UPSET IN OKLAHOMA CLASSICS DISTAFF TURF
Plenty of Vision ended a three-year run of Imadancingslew progeny winning the $114,800 Oklahoma Classics Distaff Turf, upsetting 1-5 heavy favorite Run Slewpy Run who was trying to win her sixth race in a row on the Remington Park grass course.
Run Slewpy Run and her half-sister Alternative Slew had won the Oklahoma Classics Distaff Turf the last three years in a row until the former ran second as the odds-on favorite Friday, losing in the final jumps of the 1-1/16th mile race greensward to the late closing Plenty of Vision.
Both Run Slewpy Run and Alternative Slew came from the dam Imadancingslew. Alternative Slew had won this race in 2019 and 2020. Run Slewpy Run won last year for trainer Jesse Oberlander and Alternative Slew won for his dad, the now-retired Randy Oberlander. Alternative Slew also ran second to Run Slewpy Run last year. It had become a family affair. On Friday, however, Plenty of Vision spoiled the potato salad in that family reunion.
Plenty of Vision had run third to Run Slewpy Run last time out at 7-1/2 furlongs in the Bob Barry Memorial Stakes over the turf on Sept. 23, losing by 1-1/2 lengths. The 3-year-old filly by Pollard’s Vision (Carson City), out of the Boundary mare Plenty, ran virtually the same race as she ran in the Distaff Turf, breaking fifth down the backstretch in the Bob Barry, but just came up short at that distance. On Friday she got to stretch those legs out at 1-1/16th miles and just kept coming. Run Slewpy Run couldn’t hold her off at the longer distance. Plenty of Vision won by three-quarters of a length despite Run Slewpy Run getting the jump on her, leading into the home run. Checking in third for the race was 31-1 longshot Special Treasure, who only lost the whole thing by 2-1/4 lengths.
This was trainer Scott Young’s second win in the Classics, having won with Shannon C in the Oklahoma Classics Sprint last year. Young now has one more win as a trainer than he had in the Classics as a jockey. Specialfite, who won the 2010 Oklahoma Classics Sprint with Young aboard.
Plenty of Vision was ridden by Alfredo Triana, Jr. and is owned by Michael Schmidt of Elk Horn, Neb. They both won their first Classics race with the Distaff Turf triumph.
“This is truly phenomenal,” said an exuberant Young. “She has really matured and is a real racehorse. I couldn’t be more proud. I have to tell you this has been a tough 24 hours for us. We had a horse at the clinic last night that died and now to come full circle and win this race, I have to give all the props to owner Michael Schmidt.”
Plenty of Vision won at 6-1 odds and paid $14.80 to win, $2.80 to place and $2.20 to show. Her finish for the distance over firm turf was 1:44.79. She cut into early fractions set by Morning Twilight and Special Treasure of :24.10 for the first quarter-mile, ;48.41 for the half-mile, 1:13.06 for three-quarters of a mile and 1:38.32 for the mile. Run Slewpy Run had taken the lead away from Special Treasure in the turn for home.
Plenty of Vision earned $68,880 for the win and improved her career record to 14 starts, four wins, four seconds and two thirds for earnings of $168,259.
