POLITICAL ROSE CERTAINLY ROSE ABOVE HER COMPETITION IN INAUGURAL HERITAGE PLACE OAKS TRIALS

Political Rose destroyed her competition in the first-ever trials for the $278,600 Heritage Place Oaks on Sunday at Remington park. The lucrative final is scheduled for the final night of the season on Saturday, May 28.

The 3-year-old filly American Quarter Horse out of trainer Monty Arrossa’s barn won so easily (3-3/4 lengths) that she was practically back in her stall when the rest of the field in her trial was finishing the race. This is how fast she was. Her time of :19.444 over the fast track made her the only qualifier in the top 10 under 20 seconds for the 400 yards. The horse she beat so badly that ran second, Lil Longmire, ended up the third-fastest in the top 10, qualifying for the Heritage Place Oaks as well.
Jockey Jesus Ayala had this daughter of Apollitical Jess, out of the Carters Cartel mare Cartel Rosie, so far in front in her trial there was never a doubt by the time she broke out of the gate. She had a daylight lead after three strides and Ayala just had to hold on for the 400 yards to put up the fastest time of the day.

Political Rose is owned by Dunn Ranch (Matt Dunn) of Wynnewood, Okla., and was bred in Oklahoma by Stone Chase Stables. She has now won five of nine starts lifetime. Political Rose was sent off as the public’s 3-5 betting favorite and paid $3.40 to win, $2.20 to place and $2.10 to show. Her speed index was 99 compared to the second-fastest trial qualifier Jess Give Mea Reason’s 84. As impressive as that sounds, it was even more visually shocking.

Political Rose was purchased out of the Ruidoso Select Yearling Sale in 2020 for $57,000. She improved her career record to 9-5-1-1, $281,273. Her claim to fame so far in her career was a couple of races that happened last year for her as a 2-year-old. She won her Heritage Place Futurity trial here in 2021 by 2-3/4 lengths and then just missed by a neck, finishing second in the $1.3 million final. She went on from Remington Park to try her wares in the All American Futurity trials in August and was an eye-opener in New Mexico, winning there by 2-1/2 lengths, but failing to qualify for the final. She broke a bit slow in the All American Juvenile and finished ninth. Now she is back as a 3-year-old and was a monster in her second race at Remington Park this spring.

No one would have expected Political Rose to win her debut as a 3-year-old after she had an awkward start and brushed a rival while leaving the gate. Not only did she win, she drew clear by a full-length in Allowance-$50,000 optional claiming event. It’s scary, but she appears to be getting better with each start.

The following were the 10 fastest qualifiers Sunday with times, speed index, trial number, jockey and trainer:
