RUN SLEWPY RUN WINS BOB BARRY MEMORIAL FOR SECOND CONSECUTIVE YEAR AT REMINGTON PARK

Run Slewpy Run has turned into a turf monster for the barn of trainer Jesse Oberlander, winning the $70,000 Bob Barry Memorial Stakes for the second year in a row at Remington Park on Friday night.

The Bob Barry Memorial is named for both Bob Barry, Sr. and Bob Barry, Jr. The father and son were mainstay, award-winning, sports anchors and reporters in Oklahoma City television for more than 50 years. The race is for Oklahoma-bred fillies and mares, 3-years-old and older, at 7-1/2 furlongs.

The 4-year-old steely gray Run Slewpy Run ran her undefeated streak at Remington Park on the grass to five in a row with the victory. The daughter of Den’s Legacy (Medaglia D’Oro), out of the Evansville Slew mare Imadancingslew, started the streak on Sept. 2, 2021, when she won a first-level allowance race on the grass in Oklahoma City. She won so easily that night (1-1/4 lengths) that Oberlander moved her up in class her next grass outing and she won the $70,000 Bob Barry Memorial Stakes for the first time by three lengths. Like the lawnmower she has turned into she kept proving it, winning the next turf race, the $130,000 Oklahoma Distaff Classics Turf on Oct. 15 last year. Her fourth win in a row greensward came this meet when she won an open allowance by a neck on Sept. 3.

Remington Park’s second all-time winningest jockey in history, Luis Quinonez, has been aboard for all five wins on the grass.

Oberlander has a secret to getting wins out of this filly.

“She’s easy to train; I just stay out of her way,” he said. “She’s great to have in the barn. I send her out in the morning and she just bucks and plays.”

When it comes to race night, she’s all business. Quinonez concurs.

“She knows how to win,” he said. “She wanted to go to the lead but I just sat there (off the pace in fourth) and kept my eye on the 7 (Morning Twilight).”

Quinonez has won this race three times. He won the past two years and also aboard the prolific multiple stakes winning She’s All In for trainer Roger Engel and Dr. Robert Zoellner of Tulsa, Okla., back in 2010.

Morning Twilight and Canada Candy battled to set the pace in this 7-1/2 furlongs test on the turf. That pair went nose-to-nose until leaving the final turn when Run Slewpy Run rolled up to their outside. Taking over at the top of the stretch, the odds-on 1-5 favorite moved to the finish line 1-1/2 lengths in front, stopping the timer in 1:29.51 on the firm surface. She won the race last year in 1:29.21. Oberlander has two wins in the stakes series now but the Oberlander family has three total in the past four years. Jesse’s dad Randy won in 2019 with Alternative Slew.

Owner Mike Jones of Bristow, Okla., gave all the credit to the Oberlanders. He owns both Run Slewpy Run and Alternative Slew, who are half-sisters, both out of the broodmare Imadancingslew.

“My job is to just raise good horses; they do the rest,” Jones said.

Run Slewpy Run is an Oklahoma home-bred for Jones. She paid $2.40 to win and $2.10 to place and show for her many supporters. Morning Twilight (9-2) held on for second, a head in front of the late-closing Plenty of Vision (7-1). The interior fractions were :23.77 for the quarter-mile, :47.68 for the half-mile, and 1:11.58 for six furlongs.

The winner earned $42,000 to improve her career running line to 14 starts, six wins, four seconds and one third for a bankroll of $277,424. She is now five-for-five on the Remington Park turf course and has earned $205,095 over it.
