THUNDERS ROCKNROLL ROCKED AROUND ONE-MILE TO WIN FEATURED REMINGTON PARK ALLOWANCE IN WIRE-TO-WIRE FASHION
Thunders Rocknroll shook, rattled and rolled to victory in the featured allowance race Wednesday night at Remington Park, playing catch me if you can with Runnin N Gunnin.
Runnin N Gunnin tried with all her might, but could not catch the favorite who led throughout the one mile for older fillies and mares in allowance conditions. The front-running Thunders Rocknroll looked like the NBA’s Oklahoma City Thunder on this night, winning impressively. The exacta combination seemed like an omen gift as the OKC Thunder defeated the Phoenix Suns in the NBA Cup 138-89, a runnin’ and a gunnin’ 49-point victory.
Jockey Richard Eramia took advantage of Thunders Rocknroll’s natural early speed and jumped to the lead out of the gate, hugging the rail the whole way. Erik Asmussen sat back with Runnin N Gunnin and made a huge run to get into second, but couldn’t cut into the margin of victory down the stretch. Thunders Rocknroll was sent off as the 8-5 favorite and Runnin N Gunnin was right there with her in the betting at 9-5 odds. The winner drew away in the final strides, winning by 2-3/4 lengths.
Moonlight Gambler (7-2) checked in third, another 4-3/4 lengths back of the runner-up.
Thunders Rocknroll, a 5-year-old Minnesota-bred daughter of Maclean’s Music, out of the Thunder Gulch mare Thunder and Honey, tasted sweet victory after moving from turf to dirt in this allowance race. She ran a respectable third in her only other try at Remington Park this meet to Neom Beach in an open $44,000 allowance race greensward Nov. 6 at 7-1/2 furlongs. She is trained by Wade Rarick and owned by Robert E. Lindgren of Bloomington, Minn. Thunders Rocknroll was a rock star at Canterbury in Minnesota, winning her final three races there this summer before shipping to Oklahoma City in September. If that proved anything, it’s that this mare might be the most versatile horse in the Rarick barn.
Thunders Rocknroll won a six-furlong sprint on the dirt at Canterbury and prior to that two five-furlong sprints on the lawn there. She is a home-bred for her owner. The mare earned $25,064 from the $42,000 allowance purse and improved her record to 29 starts, 10 wins, seven seconds and two thirds for earnings of $377,662.
Thunders Rocknroll made every pole a winning one, covering the first quarter-mile in :25.54, the half-mile in :49.89, three-quarters of a mile in 1:14.91, and seven-eighths of a mile in 1:27.42 before hitting the wire in 1:40.22 over the fast main track.
Thunders Rocknroll paid $5.20 to win, $3.20 to place and $2.60 to show.
