TRAINER BRAD COX CONFIDENT WITH ALPINE PRINCESS FOR REMINGTON PARK OAKS
Trainer Brad Cox, who sits third in the nation by horses’ earnings of more than $19 million this year, has a strong filly in Alpine Princess, poised for the $200,000 Remington Park Oaks on Sunday.
Owned by Full of Run Racing II and Madaket Stables, Alpine Princess is a 3-year-old Kentucky-bred daughter of Classic Empire, out of the Curlin mare Le Moine. She is also the morning line favorite at 5-2 odds for the oaks. Jockey Florent Geroux will be on Alpine Princess, he has ridden her in five of her seven career attempts.
Alpine Princess hasn’t raced since March 23 when she finished third in the $300,000 Bourbonette Oaks at Turfway Park in Florence, Ky. That doesn’t seem to bother her top trainer.
“She has really been training well,” Cox said, when interviewed by Abbey Huffman of Twin Spires before shipping the filly to Oklahoma City from Kentucky. “Enough to give us the confidence to run her (in the Remington Park Oaks). The problem is that there aren’t many conditions left out there for a 3-year-old filly who has accomplished as much as she has. We had her pointed to a race at Churchill Downs, but it came up a little bit tougher than we expected. We decided to get another work in her instead and enter at Remington Park.”
Alpine Princess has raced seven times, winning three and running third twice for a bankroll of $251,810. Her biggest win thus far is the $100,000 Untapable Stakes at Fair Grounds in New Orleans at 1 mile, 70 yards. The Remington Park Oaks will be run at a distance of 1-1/16 miles on the main track.
Cox is attempting to win his first Remington Park Oaks. He has won the main event on the Sunday program, the Grade 3 Oklahoma Derby, three times (2019-2021).
Asmussen and Castillo Double on Thursday Night Remington Card
All-time leading trainer Steve Asmussen posted two wins Thursday night at Remington Park while jockey Isaac Castillo also scored twice, once for Asmussen.
Structured ($6.20 to win) rallied from the off the pace to capture the ninth and final race on Thursday. Trained by Asmussen and ridden by Castillo, Structured broke his maiden status in his sixth career attempt, his second over the Remington Park turf course. The 3-year-old gelding owned by Winchell Thoroughbreds of Las Vegas managed to get up for the victory in the final strides of the 1-1/16 miles races.
Earlier in the evening, Asmussen scored with Tx Women For Arts ($2.40) in a seven-furlong allowance sprint. Jockey Stewart Elliott was up. Owned by J. Kirk and Judy Robison of El Paso, Texas, the 3-year-old filly won her third career race from 14 attempts.
Asmussen leads the Remington Park trainer standings with 19 wins in 21 dates of racing. He is nine ahead of Dick Cappellucci as he continues to move toward his 19th overall title in Oklahoma City.
Remington Park racing continues Friday and Saturday, Sept. 27 & 28 with the first race at 6:30pm. Oklahoma Derby Sunday, Sept. 29, begins at 3pm. All times are Central.
