TRAINER SHAWNA MANRIQUEZ DEDICATES REMINGTON PARK OAKS WIN TO LATE MOTHER, WHO LOVED KOOL N FOXY

A lot of firsts came into play in Kool N Foxy’s victory in the $159,095 Remington Park Oaks.

It was the first ever Remington Park Oaks for the track. It was also trainer Shawna Manriquez’s first stakes win in Oklahoma City and it was the first time the conditioner had an opportunity to pay tribute to her late mother
.
“My mom passed away last year and this filly was her pick,” said Manriquez. “She would come see her in the barn in the mornings and the filly just set out to make her happy.”

Jockey Daniel Torres made sure Manriquez had this opportunity, riding like wildfire down the track to the victory by three-quarters of a length at 7-2 odds. Kool N Foxy was pressed the entire way by 8-5 favorite Southern Seis, who broke a step slow. That filly was another neck in front of third-place finisher Miss KT Perry (36-1).

“The No. 7 (Miss Kt Perry) outbroke us but she (Kool N Foxy) came back and was really game to the wire,” Torres said.

Her winning time for 400 yards was :19.791 (stakes record) and was worth a 91 speed index over the fast track. Kool N Foxy paid $9.40 to win, $4.40 to place and $3.40 to show. She earned $63,638 for owner Thomas Scheckel of Bellevue, Iowa. The winner’s lifetime marks now stand at nine starts, four wins, two seconds and a bankroll of $123,414.

Kool N Foxy is by One Famous Eagle from the Walk Thru Fire mare Kool Fire. She was bred in Oklahoma by Jerry Cate. Kool N Foxy was a $40,000 purchase in the Ruidoso Select Yearling Sale in New Mexico in 2021.
Manriquez ponied her filly to the gate for the Oaks and it made her a bit fidgety.

“I went behind the gate, so I wouldn’t get too nervous,” she said. “Daniel was really great in the race. It was beautiful.”

The Remington Park Oaks was for eligible Oklahoma-bred 3-year-old fillies.
