TWO-TIME STAKES WINNER RUN SLEWPY RUN PUTS IN FIRST REMINGTON PARK PRE-SEASON WORKOUT

Trainer Jesse Oberlander sent out 4-year-old filly Run Slewpy Run for a leisurely half-mile workout at Remington Park this morning. She enjoyed her pre-season exercise under cloudy skies with temperature in the low 80s.

Remington Park begins the 67-date season on Friday, Aug. 19. Run Slewpy Run was a multiple stakes winner last year at Remington Park, capturing the $114,800 Oklahoma Classics Distaff Turf on Oct. 15 here and also the $70,000 Bob Barry Memorial Stakes on Sept. 24. Veteran rider Luis Quinonez was aboard in both victories on the turf course. Quinonez is the second all-time winningest rider at Remington Park with 1,430 wins, behind Cliff Berry, who finished with 2,124 trips to the winner’s circle at Remington.

Run Slewpy Run, an Oklahoma-bred daughter of Den’s Legacy, out of the Evansville Slew mare Imadancingslew, worked the fourth-fastest time at a half mile Monday of 10 horses that went that distance. She cruised in at :50.78 and did it handily over the fast track.

Run Slewpy Run has started 12 times with four wins, four seconds and one third-place finish for total earnings of $207,077.

Run Slewpy Run has had only one start in 2022 since she ran second to Sunday Flashback in the $70,000 Useeit Stakes on Dec.17. In her only start this year, she ran second as the 2-1 co-favorite in an allowance-optional claiming race at Canterbury in Minnesota. Run Slewpy Run just missed winning, but was disqualified for a bumping incident in the stretch and was placed third after a stewards’ review.

“There wasn’t anything wrong with her,” Oberlander said of the long layoff from December to July. “We just kicked her out until May 1 and then used the Minnesota race as a prep for Remington Park. We’ll be looking for a prep for her before the Bob Barry, so it’ll probably be about three weeks before we race her. It was a good work this morning. She did it easily.”

Voted the Champion Turf Performer last year at Remington, Run Slewpy Run showed versatility in Useeit as it was one mile on the dirt. Losing by a length to Sunday Flashback was no reason to hang her head. That win for the C.R. Trout-trained filly was her fifth win in a row and she was a heavy favorite at 2-5 odds in the Useeit. However, Sunday Flashback only got the better of Run Slewpy Run by one length and had to dig in during the final yards to hold off the hard-charging filly.

In the Oklahoma Classics Distaff Turf, Run Slewpy Run kept the trophy in the same family for the third year in a row. Her half-sister, Alternative Slew, also from Oberlander’s barn, had won the race two consecutive years before she was beaten by her sibling in 2021. Alternative Slew, who was trained to her two past victories in the race by Jesse’s father Randy, tried to make it three years in a row with Jesse but stablemate Run Slewpy Run was the best that night for owner Mike Jones of Bristow, Okla. Randy Oberlander had retired prior to the 2021 season with Jesse stepping in to take over his stable of athletes.

Run Slewpy Run won the Oklahoma Classics Distaff by three lengths as the 6-5 favorite and Alternative Slew checked in second at 2-1 odds. In the Bob Barry, Quinonez made it look easy in the saddle, drawing off by three lengths over Country Daisy, who was another neck in front of She’s All Wolfe. She’s All Wolfe is a multiple stakes winner trained by the second all-time winningest trainer at Remington, Donnie Von Hemel. She’s All Wolfe gave Von Hemel his eighth win in the Oklahoma Classics Distaff last year. So, it was an impressive victory for Run Slewpy Run in the Bob Barry.

Remington Park begins the 67-date season on Friday, Aug. 19. This season’s Bob Barry Memorial falls on Friday, Sept. 23.
