WEATHER LEADS TO CANCELLATION OF FINAL TWO RACES WEDNESDAY AT REMINGTON PARK, ASMUSSEN AND ELLIOTT TEAM FOR TRIPLE BEFORE RAIN

A pounding rainstorm hit Remington Park prior to the running of the eighth race on Wednesday night forcing the cancellation of the last two races on the nine-race card. It was a night on which the leaders prospered as top jockey Stewart Elliott and top trainer Steve Asmussen combined for three wins apiece in only seven races.

The big night for the Elliott-Asmussen combination began in race three when Copper Storm (1-5 heavy favorite) broke his maiden by 7-3/4 lengths in a race for 3,4, and 5-year-olds. Running time for the six furlongs was 1:10.97. Copper Storm paid $2.40 to win, $2.10 to place and show. Asmussen trains this Kentucky-bred 3-year-old gelding for owner Winchell Thoroughbreds (Ron Winchell) of Las Vegas, NV.

The second win of the night came in the very next race when Running Commentary broke her maiden by one length at 5-1 odds for the 2-year-old Virginia-bred filly owned by J. Kirk and Judy Robison of El Paso, Texas. Running Commentary was racing for only the third time in her career after finishing as the runner-up her first two tries. She covered the 6-1/2 furlongs in 1:19.95. Running Commentary paid $13.80 to win, $3.80 to place and $2.20 to show.

The final trip to the winner’s circle came in the sixth race with another maiden winner – Land Speed at 1-5 odds. The 2-year-old Kentucky-bred colt by Champion Sprinter Mitole, who won the Breeders’ Cup Sprint for Asmussen, drew away to a 7-1/4 length victory. The colt actually finished first in his career debut by 3-1/4 lengths at Louisiana Downs on Aug. 28, but was disqualified and placed fourth after drifting in during that race. He paid $2.40 to win, $2.10 to place and show. The colt covered five furlongs in :59.63. The winner was in this race under $30,000-claiming conditions and was bought out of the race by trainer Clint Crawford for new owner Jewel Wayne Pitman.

Elliott now has 59 wins on the season through 41 race dates, making his strong bid to repeat as the Remington Park champ for a second straight season.

Asmussen has 39 wins for the meet, 22 ahead of second-place trainer Joe Offolter. If things hold for racing’s all-time leading trainer by wins, he will pick up his 19th leading title at Remington Park.

Remington Park racing continues on Halloween night Thursday, with a 10-race program starting at 6:30 p.m.-Central.
