2023 HORSE OF MEET, MISS CODE WEST, CONTINUES PREPARATION FOR USEEIT STAKES AT REMINGTON PARK
Trainer Kevin Scholl sent out 2023 Remington Park Horse of the Meet, Miss Code West, to the racetrack Saturday, Nov. 23 for a workout in preparation for the Useeit Stakes. The race is part of the final night of the season on Friday, Dec. 13.
Miss Code West, a 3-year-old Oklahoma-bred colt by Code West, out of the Kipling mare Inca Miss, worked five furlongs over a fast track in 1:01.08, handily, under Scholl, who works the horses from his barn. Scholl is a former jockey. The bullet work Saturday for five-eighths of a mile was put up by Madethedean’slist, who was the only one of 20 horses that broke the one-minute mark. That Lynn Chleborad trainee was caught by clocker Cristina Soto in :59.78, handily.
Miss Code West won the first four races of her career as a 2-year-old last year, including three stakes races to close out the meet – the Oklahoma Classics Lassie, the Slide Show Stakes and the Trapeze Stakes (now the Toby Keith Stakes). That final performance, against open company foes, earned her the Horse of the Meet last year.
This year, she won the Oklahoma Stallion Fillies Handicap on Sept. 6 and the Oklahoma Classics Distaff Handicap on Oct. 18. Her only defeat came in the $200,000 Remington Park Oaks on Sept. 29 in an runner-up finish to Alpine Princess against open company.
The $50,000 Useeit Stakes is for 3-year-old Oklahoma-bred fillies at one mile.
Miss Code West, a $12,000 purchase by owners Jeffry and Julie Puryear of Denton, Texas, now has a record of 11 starts, eight wins, one second for $360,934 earned. The filly, bred by Bryan Hawk, was bought out of the Texas Thoroughbred Association Yearling Sale in 2022. She will be going for her seventh win at Remington Park in her next start. Jockey Floyd Wethey, Jr., is her regular rider.
Today’s live program, the 58th race date of the season, is the final afternoon of competition offered this year. The opener of nine will leave the starting gate at 2:30pm-Central, over a fast track.
