ASMUSSENS TEAM UP TO WIN LIP CHIP JOCKEY and TRAINER OF THE WEEK HONOR AS REMINGTON PARK
The big night came for conditioner Steve Asmussen on Saturday, Oct. 11 when he won three times at Remington Park to become the first to 11,000 victories in North American history. His son Erik rode all three winners to help reach the milestone.
Because of these historical events, they were named Lip Chip Trainer and Jockey of the Week. Erik rode five winners from his 15 starters for his award and his horses finished in the money 60 percent of the time this past week. He moved from virtually nowhere in the jockeys’ standings into the top 10, with 12 wins from only 49 starters putting him eighth overall. His dad, Steve, increased his lead in the trainers standings with 29 wins this meet to second-place Robertino Diodoro’s 22. It wasn’t that long ago this meet when Diodoro held down the first-place spot. Steve won 5-of-17 starts this past week.
When Beau Soleil won the eighth race on Saturday night at Remington Park, it was time for bells and whistles going off in Arlington, Texas, the venue where Steve makes his home.
“I’m extremely proud and grateful to a lot of great help, great owners and great horses,” Steve said after the race.
Remington Park was extremely lucky to be the home of this historic moment in horse racing. Beau Soleil was the last horse Asmussen had a chance with that night, although stablemate Tapit First was in that same race and finished sixth. Saturday is the final race night of the week for this Oklahoma City track and fans of Asmussen were assured of watching him pull off the feat at another track before live racing returned here Thursday, Oct. 16.
So, everyone in the Remington Park arena was biting nails and crossing fingers and hoping against hope that one of Asmussen’s final two entrants would put him over the finish line for 11,000. When the Clark Brewster-owned 4-year-old filly turned for home at the top of the stretch, two lengths behind Kerry’s Kiss, it appeared the race was on. Erik moved Beau Soleil outside of the leader and she responded to the urging of her rider, winning by a neck in the 6-1/2 furlongs race over a main fast track.
Erik’s and Steve’s two other wins Saturday came in the second and third races with Vestes and Amadora’s Empire.
Remington Park racing returns Thursday through Saturday, Oct. 16-18 with the first race nightly at 6pm-Central. Friday night, Oct. 17, is the 33rd renewal of the Oklahoma Classics, featuring a program of stakes racing for top Oklahoma-breds.
