BRAYAN PENA, SARAH DAVIDSON GRIND THEIR WAY TO LIP CHIP JOCKEY, TRAINER OF WEEK WITH MULTIPLE WINS

Brayan Pena rarely gets the top horse in a race and it’s been a rugged go of it for Sarah Davidson this Remington Park season as well. However, both found a way to grind out multiple wins this past week to earn Lip Chip Jockey and Trainer of the Week, respectively.

Pena had only won one race in almost 30 starts at Remington Park going into this past week, but he won on two-of-nine mounts during the four-night schedule, showing he can fight his way to the winner’s circle with his best efforts. It was a similar story for Davidson as she came into the week with only three wins for the meet in almost 100 starts. This past week, she found the key to victory, winning with two of eight starters and running in the money (first, second or third) in four of those eight.

Pena, a multiple stakes-winning jockey, finally broke through at Remington Park for multiple wins in a week when he teamed up with the Davidsons for his two trips to the winner’s circle. He won one for Sarah – Midnight Lady – and one for her father Brent, trainer of Chi Town Road. Both wins came in the claiming ranks. Pena was able to get four of his nine mounts in the money for a solid 44-percent ratio. Sarah was at 50-percent across the board.

The pair of victories for Pena came on Thursday night. Midnight Lady paid $30.60 to win at 14-1 odds and Chi Town Road went off as the 9-5 second favorite in his race and returned $5.60 to win to his backers.

The way Pena won his two races, one might think he was the leading rider here. He didn’t have to sweat it in the Chi Town Road race, winning by 6-1/4 lengths. The win with Midnight Lady was even more impressive, drawing off to a 7-1/4 length victory over 1-2 odds-on favorite Affair from trainer Robertino Diodoro’s barn with top jockey Ramon Vazquez in the irons.

It really should be no surprise that Pena’s success finally surfaced this past week. He has had a good career, winning 413 races in 3,843 mounts with horses’ earnings of $9,748,830. He had his best year in 2022 when his horses banked more than $1.5 million.

Sarah’s other winner besides Midnight Lady was Flash Master, also a claiming winner. Like Pena, both came last Thursday night. Flash Master was ridden by Mario Fuentes and crossed the finish line first in her claiming race by six lengths. Despite being shuffled back at the start of the race, Flash Master went from almost last to first in a heartbeat. Trailing by four lengths early, she found another gear and was ahead of the field after only a half-mile. She drew away from there as the 2-1 betting public’s second choice. She paid $6.80 to win.

It was Sarah’s 143rd and 144th win lifetime and her horses have earned $3,184,855. She has increased her earnings annually from 2018-2024, banking less than $100,000 in 2018 to more than $700,000 last year.

Remington Park racing continues this week through Saturday, Dec. 13. The first race nightly is at 6pm-Central.
