BRENT DAVIDSON’S FIVE-TIME WINNER FORT HOOD APPEARS READY OFF LAYOFF, SARAH DAVIDSON HAS STAKES CONTENDER MEDICINE DOG
Fort Hood hasn’t raced since June 23, but he was in top form then, winning two of his last three starts at Lone Star Park in Grand Prairie, Texas. That talent was put on display by the five-time winner out of trainer Brent Davidson’s barn on Monday morning, getting the bullet workout for a half mile at Remington Park.
The 4-year-old gelded Texas-bred son of Moro Tap, out of the Bandini mare Let’s Get Fiscal, blistered a half-mile Monday in :47.47, the fastest of 12 horses that worked four furlongs on this day. Fort Hood has had five morning workouts at Remington Park since Oct. 5, recording a near-bullet on Oct. 12 when clocker Cristina Soto caught him in :47.93 for a half-mile. That was the second-fastest that morning of 61 that trained four furlongs.
Fort Hood’s last race prior to his layoff was a win among allowance-optional claiming horses. He scored by a half- length against Texas-breds under jockey Richard Eramia, who was red-hot last week at Remington Park, winning four on the Nov. 9 program.
Fort Hood is owned by Stephen R. Baker of Dallas, and was bred by him as well. The gelding also won at Lone Star Park on May 10 this year in another Texas-bred allowance, this one by 1-1/4 lengths as the 3-1 second favorite. The favorite in that particular race was Reckless Red (2-1), another Davidson horse, but not Brent’s. Reckless Red is trained by Sarah Davidson, Brent’s daughter.
The Davidsons have had an excellent season at Remington Park despite limited stables. Sarah claimed a horse named Medicine Dog this meet, who is expected to go favored in Saturday’s eighth race, a 5-1/2-furlong allowance for 2-year-olds that are non-winners of two races.
Medicine Dog, a 2-year-old Kentucky-bred son of Constitution, out of the Cairo Prince mare Royal Charlotte, broke his maiden by nine lengths against maiden claiming $30,000 foes on Oct. 10 at Remington Park. The claim appears to be a good one for Sarah’s keen eye for owner Henry S. Witt, Jr. Not many would have foreseen a nine-length win in a career debut, but Sarah did.
She brought Medicine Dog right back in a stakes race – the $75,000 Clever Trevor on Oct. 25 and he showed that same talent and ability, by running third to Jolly Samurai, an undefeated gelding trained by Danny Pish. Jolly Samurai has won the Kip Deville and Clever Trevor stakes in back-to-back starts and is 3-for-3 lifetime now. He is expected to start next in the $300,000 Springboard Mile on Dec. 13. Medicine Dog only lost to Jolly Samurai by 2-1/4 lengths in the Clever Trevor.
Sarah claimed Medicine Dog from owner Rosette Ranch and trainer Robertino Diodoro in that maiden claiming event in his first out. Wyatt Rosette had purchased Medicine Dog for $20,000 out of the Ocala Breeders Sale June 2-Year-Olds and Horses of Racing Age Sale this year.
In the trainer standings Sarah Davidson has 10 wins from 67 starts while her father, Brent has won eight races from 83 attempts moving into this racing week at Remington Park. Multiple Hall of Famer and racing’s all-time training wins leader, Steve Asmussen, is at the top of the season standings here with 43 wins from 145 starters.
The 49th race date of the season begins tonight at 6:30pm-Central. The nine race card features turf events in races one, five and nine. The track is fast and the turf is firm.
