GONCALVES CONTINUES TO CHASE KEY CAREER NUMBER, ULLERY IN FOR DAY
Remington Park jockey Leandro Goncalves is only two wins away from the 2,300th trip to the winner’s circle in his North American career. He currently sits in 10th place in the jockey standings here with 21 victories.
Goncalves, a regular rider at Remington Park annually and a multiple graded stakes-winning jockey, had his biggest year in 2012 when his horses earned $7,269,844. That was the year he won the Grade 2, $500,000 Super Derby aboard Bourbon Courage at Louisiana Downs in Bossier City, La.
Goncalves has three chances Saturday night at Remington Park to get those two victories. He has mounts in the third, eighth and ninth races with Gospel Forest (6-1 morning-line odds), Number One Dude (4-1), and Little Iris (2-1) in the ninth, respectively.
Day Off, Ullery In
Remington Park announcer Dale Day will have the Saturday night program off. Jesse Ullery will take the microphone for the nine-race program.
Ullery, formerly the announcer at Will Rogers Downs in Claremore, Okla. and Blue Ribbon Downs in Sallisaw, Okla., has substituted on many occasions at Remington Park.
Ullery will have the opportunity to call a race with a horse he owns on Saturday as Penny Powers attempts to stay undefeated in the ninth and final event of the night. The 2-year-old filly flashed brilliance in her career debut on Oct. 12, breaking her maiden against fellow Oklahoma-breds, in a turf sprint at five furlongs. She rallied from just off the pace to win by 6-1/2 lengths. Floyd Wethey, Jr. will be up again Saturday night.
Penny Powers is at 3-1 odds in the morning-line, just behind Little Iris (2-1) who has run second in consecutive stakes races against Oklahoma-breds, the Oklahoma Classics Lassie (Oct. 18) at six furlongs and the Slide Show Stakes (Nov. 8) at one mile.
Penny Powers is owned by the Pryor, Okla. partnership of Scott Young Racing and Ullery Bloodstock. Young trains the filly.
The ninth is an allowance for non-winners of two career races at six furlongs.
Saturday night racing begins at 6:30pm-Central.
