JOCKEY ALFREDO TRIANA, JR., TRIPLES ON SLOPPY TRACK, $100 WINNER INCLUDED AT REMINGTON PARK
Mark it down. The only one that may like a wet, windy, sloppy day more than jockey Alfredo Triana, Jr., is Oklahoma City KWTV-Channel 9 meteorologist and severe weather prognosticator David “If Grandma is at the casino, call her; you have time” Payne.
With a sloppy racetrack under him and his mounts after continuous morning rains throughout the Oklahoma City metro area on Monday, Triana put on his rain gear and went out and dominated live racing at Remington Park, scoring three wins on the nine-race card.
Triana won races three, five and six, one of them the longest shot on the board in a six-horse field that triggered some big payoffs in multi-race wagers.
The first trip to the winner’s circle for Triana on Monday was aboard Angel on Fire in the third race, a 5-1/2 furlong sprint on the main track for claiming non-winners of three races lifetime. Triana sat just off the early pace in third and was still behind by four lengths in second at the top of the stretch. He asked the 3-year-old Kentucky-bred filly for run in mid-stretch and she poured it on, winning by three-quarters of a length as the 2-1 second favorite. Little Tap Dancer also went off at 2-1, but was the favorite by a few dollars and was the horse that was up by four lengths as they turned for home. Triana won this race for Remington Park’s all-time winningest owner Danny Caldwell of Poteau, Okla., and trainer Oscar Flores. Angel on Fire paid $6.60 to win, $5 to place and $3 to show. Running time was 1:06.05. She was bred by Bob Lewis and Dr. Gary James.
Triana’s second win of the day came aboard another closer and this time the favorite, Our Cornerstone, in the fifth race. Our Cornerstone was well back in seventh in the early part of this seven-furlong race in starter allowance/optional claiming company. The 5-year-old Oklahoma-bred gelding came rolling down the stretch, rallying five wide in the middle of the track to get up by 1-1/4 lengths for the win. He had gone off the 2-1 favorite and paid $6 to win, $3.40 to place and $2.80 to show. Triana and Our Cornerstone won this event for owner and breeder Circle Bar H of Sallisaw, Okla., and trainer Jerry Stephens. Running time for the race was 1:22.69.
Then the fun started. In just a six-horse field in the sixth race. Triana’s mount, Ilikeher, a 2-year-old Oklahoma-bred filly, went off at 49-1 odds and cruised home to win by three-quarters of a length and pay $100 on a $2 win ticket. Triana pulled off this surprise for owner/breeder Olis Goodnight of Meade, Kan., and trainer Boyd “Jobie” Caster. This second-time starter had run seventh in her first try, losing by 18-3/4 lengths, but she loved the sloppy going Monday.
Ruby’s Posse (5-1) checked in second, another 2-1/4 lengths ahead of third-place finisher Slug Bug (11-1). The 1-5 heavy favorite, Go Lauren Go, was nowhere to be found, finishing fifth, beaten 7-1/4 lengths.
The win by the huge longshot sparked a major usage of maximum lights on the toteboard. The 1-6 exacta paid $314.60 for a $2 wager; the 50-cent trifecta was worth $576.40; the 10-cent superfecta returned $258.23, and the 50-cent Pick 3 that began with race four paid $306.30. Ilikeher not only paid $100 to win, but $27.20 to place and $13 to show. She covered the five furlongs in 1:00.43.
The late Pick 4 and Pick 5 were also greatly affected by Triana’s huge longshot score aboard Ilikeher. Joining that 49-1 winner was Brock on By in the eighth race at 9-1. The Prime Time Pick 4 returned $932.95 to those that came up with the correct combination in races 6-9 and the Pick 5 over races 5-9 was worth $2,797.05. Both wagers are 50-cent minimum bets.
Triana is approaching his 500th career Thoroughbred win. He currently has 488 victories in a career that started in 2014. However, Triana still splits part of his calendar year, riding American Quarter Horses, where he has 213 wins with that breed.
Triana has excelled with Thoroughbreds more since 2021, topping $1 million in earnings each year since then. His highpoint campaign came in 2022 with $2,440,476 in earnings and 101 wins.
In 2024, Triana has 71 wins and earnings of $1,935,831. He is currently at 21 wins for the Remington Park season, good for a ninth-place tie in the jockey standings. Stewart Elliott leads in a runaway with 72 victories.
Remington Park has nine races for today’s program. All are on the main track as the turf course has been closed for the remainder of the season. Sunny skies will greet the races that begin at 2:30pm-Central.
