MILESTONE WAITING ON HERNANDEZ AT REMINGTON PARK
Jockey Harry Hernandez has hit the milestone-approach wall.
As it so often seems to happen, Hernandez has stalled in gaining wins towards a major career milestone. He still needs six victories to reach 1,000 wins in the United States. He has been stuck on 994 since Oct. 12, the date of his last score.
Hernandez rode Courageous Cappen to victory in a $10,000-level claiming event for older fillies and mares on Saturday, Oct. 12 at Remington Park, winning the six-furlong sprint by four lengths. Courageous Cappen is owned by Vinney Pigue of Ooltewah, Tenn. and trained by Danele Durham.
It has now been more than eight calendar days since the last win for Hernandez. He hopes to change things for the better, riding four of the eight races, on the Wednesday night program at Remington Park. Hernandez will be up on One Big Haas (5-1 morning-line odds) in race two, Waver (8-5 morning-line favorite) in race four, Northvale Road (5-2 morning-line favorite) in race six and Saline River (5-2) in race eight.
Hernandez moved to the USA from his native Puerto Rico in 2015.
Horsemen Standings – Owners
Bryan Hawk of Shawnee, Okla. opened up a bit in the owner standings with his two scores on Oklahoma Classics Night, Oct. 18. He has a four-win margin over Dick Cappellucci of El Paso, Texas, 16 to 12.
Remington Park all-time leading owner Danny Caldwell, of Poteau, Okla., won his third Oklahoma Classics Cup with Inca Empire. Caldwell now sits third in the owner standings with 10 wins.
Trainers
Steve Asmussen, the sport’s all-time leader in training wins and a multiple Hall of Famer, has 31 wins on the season. He holds a 14-win margin over Joe Offolter (17) in second. Cappellucci is third with 15 training wins.
Jockeys
Stewart Elliott is well clear of his competition with 53 wins through 36 race dates. If he can maintain his victory pace, he will flirt with reaching the 100-win mark. No leading rider at Remington Park has topped the triple-digit mark since Cliff Berry won 112 races in 2005.
The all-time Remington Park record for jockey wins belongs to Tim Doocy who won 126 in 1997. That was an elongated season of racing with 107 dates.
There are 31 race dates remaining on the 2024 Remington Park schedule.
Floyd Wethey, Jr. is second in the jockey standings with 34 wins. Jose Alvarez and David Cabrera are tied in third-place with 28.
The Wednesday night card at Remington Park, race night 37, has eight races. The first, fifth and eighth are over the turf course. Main track is fast, turf is firm. The first race is at 6:30pm-Central.
