OKLAHOMA DERBY WINNERS FINISH ONE-TWO IN GRADE 2 CLARK HANDICAP AT CHURCHILL DOWNS FRIDAY
The horses that ran 1-2 in the Grade 2, $600,000 Clark Handicap at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Ky., Friday – Rattle N Roll and Most Wanted – had won past Oklahoma Derbies at Remington Park.
Rattle N Roll, winner of the Grade 3, $400,000 Oklahoma Derby on Sept. 25, 2022, just beat Most Wanted to the wire today at Churchill Downs in the 1-1/8th mile race, by three-quarters of a length. Most Wanted won the most recent Oklahoma Derby here on Sept. 29. Another Oklahoma Derby participant, Hit Show (the favorite here in 2023), crossed the finish line third in the Clark Handicap, but was disqualified and placed fifth. He closed to get third, beaten four lengths and was the 3-2 wagering favorite in the Clark. Hit Show, a three-time graded stakes winner this year, has earned more than $1.3 million in his career.
The all- Oklahoma Derby winner exacta in the Clark Handicap paid $54.54 on a $2 wager.
When Rattle N Roll won the Oklahoma Derby, he was ridden to victory by Brian Hernandez, Jr., for trainer Ken McPeek, the same connections in the Clark. He won the Clark in a time of 1:49.60. The 5-year-old Kentucky-bred horse by Connect, out of the Johannesburg mare Jazz Tune, came from off the pace, sixth in the early going, to run down the pacesetters.
In his Oklahoma Derby win, Rattle N Roll was dead last in that 1-1/8 miles race down the backstretch, and defeated King Ottoman by 1-1/2 lengths. He was sent off that day at 7-5 odds, the second favorite to even-money Best Actor, who ran third in that Derby.
When Most Wanted won the Derby this year, he was the 4-5 favorite and won by a full-length over EJ Won the Cup (2-1) under jockey Florent Geroux for trainer Brad Cox. The 3-year-old Kentucky-bred colt by Candy Ride (ARG), out of the Distorted Humor mare Beach Walk, is owned by his breeders, Gary and Mary West.
Rattle N Roll improved to 23 starts, nine wins, two seconds and three thirds for a bankroll of $2,141,641, according to Equibase statistics. Rattle N Roll was purchased at the Keeneland September Yearling Sale in 2020 for $210,000 with McPeek as the agent for owner Lucky Seven Stable.
Most Wanted sits at four wins from five starts and one second for $636,553 in earnings. He was a home-bred. The Clark was his first career loss.
