RECORD-SETTING SEASON GIVES ASMUSSEN 15TH REMINGTON PARK TRAINING TITLE, END ZONE ATHLETICS NEW LEADING OWNER

Steve Asmussen, a member of the National Racing Hall of Fame and Oklahoma Horse Racing Hall of Fame at Remington Park, won his 15th seasonal training title in Oklahoma City with 83 victories.

Asmussen won his fourth consecutive Chuck Taliaferro Memorial Award, named in honor of one of Remington Park’s leading trainers in its formative years. Asmussen also reached the top of the all-time local standings, passing Donnie Von Hemel for the most wins in Remington Park history. Asmussen won four races on Dec. 15 to move to the lead with 1,051 career Remington Park wins.

Among the scores on the final day of the season was the $400,000 Springboard Mile with Shoplifted who picked up 10 qualifying points for the 2020 Kentucky Derby with the triumph. Shoplifted provided Asmussen his sixth win in Remington Park’s top 2-year-old stakes event.

Finishing second to Asmussen in the season standings was Karl Broberg with 57 wins while Federico Villafranco was third with 27 wins.

Asmussen also topped all trainers with stable earnings of $2,541,479. In addition to Shoplifted, his other major stakes victories this season included: Lady Apple in the Grade 3, $200,000 Remington Park Oaks; Magical in the $100,000 She’s All In Stakes; Jungle Runner in the $100,000 Clever Trevor Stakes; and Rowdy Yates with a pair of wins versus Oklahoma-breds in the $100,000 Oklahoma Classics Juvenile and the $75,000 Don McNeill Memorial.

Finishing second by stable earnings for trainers was Karl Broberg with $1,101,892. Third in earnings was C.R. Trout with $607,192.

END ZONE ATHLETICS – Ran Ricks, Jr. Award for leading owner
The Mansfield, Texas partnership of trainer Karl Broberg and Matt Johanson, End Zone Athletics ascended to the top of the Remington Park owner standings for the first time. In doing so, they unseated Danny Caldwell who had led the owner standings for nine consecutive years in Oklahoma City.

End Zone Athletics won 32 races over the 67-date Thoroughbred Season from 158 total starts, winning 20% of their attempts. The End Zone Athletics runners posted top-three finishes in 55% of their starts.

Danny Caldwell of Poteau, Okla. finished in a tie for second in the standings with Steve Asmussen of Arlington, Texas. Both owners posted 25 wins.

The leading owner by earnings was C.R. Trout of Edmond, Okla. A member of the Oklahoma Horse Racing Hall of Fame, Trout runners compiled $597,671 with Shotgun Kowboy posting the biggest win for the operation. A millionaire Oklahoma-bred, Shotgun Kowboy won his fourth career Oklahoma Classics Cup, the headline $175,000 event on the Oklahoma Classics program for state-breds.

End Zone Athletics and their powerful stable of claiming and allowance horses, made $566,209 for second in owner earnings. Danny Caldwell was third with $523,742.

The leading owner at Remington Park is named the Ran Ricks, Jr. Award winner, named in honor of the track’s all-time leading owner at the time of his passing in late 1996.

DAVID CABRERA – Pat Steinberg Award for leading jockey
Jockey David Cabrera won his second consecutive riding title with 83 victories. The top jockey at Remington Park earns the Pat Steinberg Award, named after the track’s all-time leading jockey at the time of his passing in 1993.

Cabrera, a resident of Jones, Okla., had 414 mounts for the season and 71 seconds with 60 more thirds to go along with his victories. He won 20% of his attempts and was in the top three finishing positions with 52% of his starters.

Cabrera’s top mount was Welder, the speedy Oklahoma-bred sprinter who won the David Vance Sprint, Oklahoma Classics Sprint and Silver Goblin stakes this season.

Jockey Richard Eramia was second to Cabrera with 69 wins while Ramon Vazquez was third with 66.

Cabrera led all jockeys in earnings with $2,159,916. Second in mount earnings was Eramia with $1,744,062 while Vazquez was third with $1,552,124.
