REMINGTON PARK CANCELS THURSDAY RACING DUE TO SEVERE WEATHER, ENTIRE PROGRAM WILL NOW TAKE PLACE SUNDAY

Remington Park has canceled its 12-race live card for Thursday due to severe weather and heavy accumulation of rain in Oklahoma City. Tornado and flood watches were prevalent in the area in the early evening, according to local meteorologists.

After a meeting involving track management, racing officials and jockeys, the races were canceled about 6:30pm., about 30 minutes after the delay began. The entire program will be brought back, as it was carded, on Sunday, May 30 with the first race 1:30pm. That special program will now become the final race date of the season.

Approximately two inches of rain fell in the metro area during the 5:15-6 p.m. timeframe, The rain was so heavy, with strong winds, that the field for the first race was called back to the paddock out of safety concerns and for lack of visibility. They returned to the paddock to wait out the storm. After 30 minutes, the races were called.

The richest horse race in Oklahoma history will take place Saturday at Remington Park and Political Rose has been made the 5-2 morning line favorite for the Grade 1, $1,314,980 Heritage Place Futurity.

The Heritage Place Futurity and the other eight stakes races for Saturday, make up the “Night of Champions.” The evening features six Grade 1 events and total purses of more than $2.7 million, making it the richest night or racing ever conducted in Oklahoma.

Remington Park racing continues Friday-Sunday, May 28-30, for the final weekend of the season. The first race is at 6pm on Friday, with a special early start time of 5pm on Saturday. Sunday racing is at 1:30pm.
