TRAINER TREY WOOD RULES DAY WITH FIVE REMINGTON PARK TRAINING RACE WINNERS INCLUDING FASTEST IN DANGEROUS LEIGH
There are three things that are 100 percent certain in life – death, taxes and trainer Trey Wood ruling Remington Park in training races on the third week of February. He did it again Tuesday for the third year in a row.
Wood’s 2-year-olds preparing for the upcoming American Quarter Horse, Paint and Appaloosa Season, won five of 12 races Wednesday. He had the fastest of the day with Dangerous Leigh winning the 11th race into a headwind of 16 mph, handling 250 yards in :13.662, earning a speed index of 74. Jockey Ricky Ramirez had the mount on Dangerous Leigh.
Last year, on this same week of February, Wood’s juveniles won 5-of-14 schooling events and the year before that, they won 8-of-10.
Dee Keener, the three-time defending champion trainer at Remington Park, had the fastest of the day through eight races with BP Priceless, but that wound up being the third-fastest winner. When Wood’s quickest of five horses, Dangerous Leigh, won the 11th race, she took the crown for the day. Then the second-fastest was in the final race of 12 when Cowboy Eckspress covered the distance in :13.674 for a 73 speed index.
Dangerous Leigh has some superstar in her. Her dam (mother), Danjerous, is a half-sister to the late multiple World Champion, Danjer. Danjerous was winless in two starts in her career, but her dam’s half-brother Danjer won 22 times in his career in 35 starts for almost $2.5 million in earnings. Dangerous Leigh looks like she takes after Danjer more than her dam. She is by Apollitical Jess out of Danjerous, who was sired by Favorite Cartel, another champion.
Dangerous Leigh is owned by West Texas Racing Partners, who purchased her for $130,000 from the Ruidoso Select Yearling Sale last year. The filly was bred in Oklahoma by Taos River Ranch.
The bloodlines for Dangerous Leigh are about as blue as you can get in the Quarter Horse breeding business. Apollitical Jess has sired three All American Futurity winners in his bloodstock career. Favorite Cartel has thrown a ton of winners as well. He has been a leading sire of money earners and is the father of Triple Crown Futurity winner Hezgothelook Z, who won the All American, Ruidoso and Rainbow futurities.
Wood’s other four winners on Wednesday were Lethal Monday, Shesa Valiant Eagle, Ttaannkk, and Rhynestone Cowboy.
The other training race winners, over a fast track, besides the top two (Quarter Horses unless otherwise noted), their times (in order from fastest to slowest), speed index, trainers and race number were:
