WITHOUT A TRACE PUTS END TO SILVER PROSPECTOR’S WINNING STREAK IN FEATURED ALLOWANCE AT REMINGTON PARK

Without a Trace ended the two-race win streak of Silver Prospector at Remington Park this meet with a victory in the featured allowance race Saturday night.

Silver Prospector had won two in a row in open allowance races here, his first season at Remington Park, and had not been beaten here until Without a Trace took advantage of the front-runners coming back to the pack as he pounced on them from third in the 1-1/16th mile race over a fast main track.

Owner-trainer Karen Jacks had experimented by sending Without a Trace to the grass in his last outing in the $75,000 Remington Green Stakes on Sept. 29. Without a doubt, the 4-year-old Kentucky-bred gelding by Bernardini, out of the Indian Charlie mare Tracings, did not care for the blades of grass under his hooves that afternoon. He ran seventh, beaten 17 lengths. Without a Trace had won his last dirt try with optional $50,000 claimers on Sept. 11 here by two lengths. The season’s second-leading rider Floyd Wethey, Jr., was up that night and handled him brilliantly in his return to his preferred surface. He and Without a Trace just waited behind the front-running duo of Big Bernie and Silver Prospector, then going to the lead in the stretch.

Big Bernie spit the bit first and that left only Silver Prospector to catch in the stretch. Wethey had more horse left in the lane and he had all the momentum coming down the middle of the track to get the win. Without a Trace prevailed by a full length at the wire.

Silver Prospector, who is now two-for-three at Remington Park. That 7-year-old horse trained by leading conditioner Steve Asmussen had all the back class to boast, having won the Southwest Stakes at Oaklawn Park in Hot Springs, Ark., as a 3-year-old. He faltered on the Triple Crown trail in the Rebel Stakes and Arkansas Derby, but made a nice run this year, finishing second in the Grade 3 Oaklawn Mile, beaten by Frosted Grace. On Saturday, however, he would have to settle for second under leading rider Stewart Elliott.

Tossing out that pitiful try greensward, Without a Trace has now won four of his last five tries on dirt. He was bred by Godolphin.

Without a Trace sat behind early fractions set by Big Bernie of :24.09 for the first quarter-mile and :48.07 for the half-mile and Without a Trace had begun his move when they hit three-quarters in 1:12.85. After he had taken over in the stretch the timer hit 1:37.77 for the mile and the winning time was 1:44.26. He was sent off at 2-1 odds as the third wagering favorite and paid $6.80 to win, $3.60 to place and $2.20 to show. Silver Prospector held on for second as the 7-5 post-time favorite and Spoiler (9-5 second favorite) checked in third, a half-length back of Silver Prospector.

Without a Trace earned $23,949 from the $40,000 purse and improved lifetime to 11 starts, five wins, two seconds and one third for a bankroll of $138,946.

Silver Prospector pushed his career earnings to $1,662,774 with the second-place money of $7,983.
